Oven smells like gas when on

We have a basic Hotpoint oven model.
The stove works fine.
When we turn on the oven it begins to smell like gas after 10 minutes and eventually sets off our smoke alarm. The oven is clean.
Our landlord put in a new oven with the same problem. Could it be a problem with the connection?o

If the oven is new and has never been used, it should be cured before using. There is a curing your oven page in all manuals before use. You have to wash and burn off all the chemicals used in making the thing. Are u sure it sets off the smoke alarm and not the carbon monoxide alarm. Be careful some alarms are equipped with both now a days and people cant tell the difference. Get your gas company there to check it. Carbon monoxide is undetectable to the nose and is deadly so please be very careful! If there is smoke and u have cured ur oven then there maybe some old food on the burner, remove the bottom plate and check. If there is no smoke and no food on the burner then u need to change ur ignitor. It maybe old, cracked or both. Typical repair cost on high end range is 300 - 400 for 1 ignitor. Good luck. And I urge u to see if it is Carbon Monoxide!

I smell something burning when the oven is on...not as "eggy" as gas but I have a pregnant wife and I'm scared to use this thing. Is it just a new oven smell?

I would have a service call made and have the service technician check for correct installation
Smells ( that cannot be attributed to burnt food, gas ) should be investigated as they are the early warning signs of a problem
at least you will have peace of mind and may be advised as to a product that can be used to remove the smell

I have a GE Hotpoint stove/range model num 317B6641P001 that the oven will not ignite nor will the igniter turn on.

It sounds like the ignitor is bad...you will not or should not smell gas if ignitor is bad...gas valve is not supposed to open until the sensor by the ignitor has reached a certain temp. It's a safety feature. If you replace the ignitor, it should work like normal.

My ge xl44 oven will not turn on. There is no gas smell or sounds coming from oven. Burners are working fine. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. Worked fine last night - now nothing from the stove but the top works fine.

Gas stove When I turn on the oven, I smell gas,

This is more than likely the igniter to be sure you will need to do an amp draw on the igniter. To do this watch the video on troubleshooting a gas oven at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html
