We need to know what kind of camera you have and the information as to how it was handled in your use.
Was it around any of the following?:
Sand.... spells doom.
Water which gets into any parts... spells doom.
Any kind of impact whatsoever... this can lead to a number of problems.

Since you have not mentioned what your camera is, although you are in the D40 section, I assume it to be some kind of Nikon lens.
My suggestions:
If it is a Nikon lens... consider having Nikon to repair it. Nikon Site
If you do not want to repair it, then consider to sell it as parts or repair or as is on a site such as Ebay.

It is not automatically focusing and there seems to be a grating when you set it on manual and turn to focus.

When I've seen that before it's usually due to the camera being dropped on the lens and jamming up the motor in it. I'd suggest contacting Nikon or the store where you bought it.

My lense will not auto or manual focus. It seems jammed. It worked in the morning and next time I went to use it it didnt work. I made sure the camera battery was fully charged. The other lenses work...

Is the manual focus ring not turning? If not, you're going to need to send it in for repair, shop around for local shops as they offer competitive prices. If your lens is still under warranty you can send it into Nikon, here is their contact info for repairs:

Canon 24-105 lens. Manual focus ring is stuck, does not turn, auto focus works fine. Thanks, Mark

Place the lens on the palm of your hand and tap to see if any dirt comes off.Use a pressure air to blow into the gaps to see if the jam can be released off. If not your will need to open to clean and release.

Focus Error

It's a message given when the internal lenses get jammed, possibly due to debris within the gears that move the focus. The "Focus Error" message can involve many FujiFilm models.

My camera lense will not focus automatically or manually.

There is no battery in the lens.  The lens receives power from the camera. Whether or not the lens is getting power, though, you should be able to focus manually.
When you say you can't focus manually, do you mean that you can't turn the focusing ring on the lens, or that when you turn the ring the image does not come into focus?
If you decide the lens needs to be repaired, I recommend sending it to Canon.  You can go to their website (canonusa.com if you're in the US), click on support, and follow the links.

HELP Sigma 24-60MM wide Angle

The helicoid or the barrel thread in the lens may be jammed. The lens will have to be serviced. You should take it back for warranty service.

As for myself, I aways buy origional manufacture lenses and accessorites for my cameras.
