When I've seen that before it's usually due to the camera being dropped on the lens and jamming up the motor in it. I'd suggest contacting Nikon or the store where you bought it.

M means Manual Focus. If you set the lens to this then you need to turn the lens manually to get it into focus. A means Auto Focus and when the lens is det to this it should focus automatically but you need to set the mode button OFF Manual. It should work on any other setting.
1. Use the slider switch on the left of the camera to set it to MF (manual focus). The focus ring is an electronic one rather than a physical control like the zoom ring, so the response can seem slow.
2 Go into the camera menu and enable DMF (Direct Manual Focus). This allows you to override the autofocus simply by adjusting the focus control, but it does not work if the slider switch is set to the AF C setting (continuous autofocus), it only work in the AF-S (AF only activates once when the shutter is half pressed).
Check your settings in the camera menu. Make sure that auto focus is selected. Also set the focus for OTHER than spot focus. (Spot focus can be real touchy.) Still no autofocus? you will need service from Canon.
Hi pablo_cornel, One simple question, is the camera in manual focus mode. On the right of the lens mount, as you look at the camera is a switch that reads AF and M. If that switch is set to M you are in manual focus mode. Also, does the 18-55 mm lens have a manual override switch?
Remove the lens and clean the contacts between the body and the lens with a pencil eraser. Make sure the camera is on Autofocus mode. If these don't solve the problem, take it to an authorized service center.
Check house not inadvertently set it to macro.
If it has manual focusing try to reset the focus collar - check the manual for something you may have overlooked

Follow These Simple Steps To Set The Manual Focus
1. Set the power switch to CAMERA mode.
2. Turn the MENU DIAL up or down until the FOCUS is highlighted and then press the ENTER button. M. FOCUS(MF) will display.
3. Turn the MENU DIAL up or down until the object is in focus. Zoom out a little if focusing is difficult.
4. To return to AF (Auto Focus: ), press the ENTER button again.
