There was no danger and you were in no danger....the batteries just got juggled around in such a way that they were shorted out and discharging very rapidly...
Replace the batteries with new ones and install them correctly and everything will be fine...
Have fan start capacitor checked/replaced by licensed tech, or electrician as they are very dangerous to work with if not experienced and can give a very high voltage shock, that could be fatal. They basically store and increase voltage to higher range for start up of fan and compressor.
The smell is because of the stuff growing inthe water from the air conditioner. When you run the a/c it keeps the water condensed on the coil. When you turn the a/c off and run just the fan, it allows the water to warm up and start evaporating thus allowing the goodies in the water to become airborn. It would be adviseable to have the unit disassembled and cleaned by a professional due to the obvious danger of mixing water and cleaning chemicals with electrical equipment
