SOURCE: fuel gauge
there is little else that causes this except the fuel guage sending unit in the gas tank.

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.

most of the time this is simply just the float in the gas tank getting stuck had the same problem in my car. unfortunately you have to access the gas tank to fix, but it is an easy fix. hope this helps any questions let me know.

I got a magnet from an old stereo speaker and used it to flip it around on 06 Maxima, took five minutes.

Is under the circular plate on the gas tank. This is where you start paying for parts. Whenever you remove the sender mechanism take masking tape and Mark each wire you unplug number each or color code them. Make a rough drawing of where each wire goes. First disconnect the positive side of the battery cable from the battery.check all wires if they are properly installed ,okay. If loose individually crimp each connector, if harnessed through a connector check each pin for proper connection. Check the sender, by reconnecting battery turn on the car do not start obseve the fuel gauge is it working. If so you saved the expense of replacing the sender. If you don't get a desired operation now it gets a bit costly. If you buy used you get a 50-50 chance of it not working. You buy new you get new, be careful to disconnect the battery when replacing a stray wire touch or wrong connection buys you a burnt out sender. If you don't feel secure in doing this repair take it to a mechanic.
