yes you need a capacitor or a hard start capacitor or a burnt wire somewhere by it or compressor

If it works with the remote,then you have a bad connection at the power switch,or the switch itself is bad.

I have the same problem - bought mine 4-5 years ago been suffering ever since - spent so much money on Friedrich and still using fans. Piece of ****.

It sounds like the unit is either level or tilted down in the front, not allowing the water to run to the back of the ac and the blower wheel is picking the water up and blowing it into the room.
You need to put a level on it and lower the back of the ac so the water the coil removes can run to the back of the unit and that should solve your problem.

if the fan is not running when you put the unit in A/c mode the coils would freeze up
