Optical leads have a red light that shows even when unplugged. If that is not on the socket is switched off.
Testimonial: "Hi the red light is on mate thanks"
i know that and it is on
It might be on, but are the sound settings correct for all your devices. Will they pass the signals to your Sound Bar? I assume the Sound Bar is connected to the TV via the optical. So is the TV's settings correct?
Not sure I'll have to get instructions out mate
Hi tv settings all good still no sound so changed optical to AV lead sound comes on but hisses like mad

If there is no sound from your player, you can check the following things:
1. Blu-ray player audio settings
2. HDMI cable connection error
3. Incompatibility between your Blu-ray player and TV
4. Blu-ray discs damage or restriction.
SOURCE: HDMI SOUND
True HD can only work with HDMI interface and is only available on some newer HD DVDs. Check the DVD to see if the True HD encoding is available.
SOURCE: HDMI AUDIO NOT PASSING THROUGH?
OK try to connect all to tv and from tv connect the sound in digital to H/K receiver and you will have sound at the receiver no matter what.
SOURCE: Need help hooking up TV, BluRay, Home Theatre & cable box
I found that since the Panasonic TH50PZ80U TV has only 2 HDMI ports on the back of the TV, the best solution for me was to use component (red, blue, green) cables to connect the Home Theatre to the TV. I suppose I/you could connect the home theatre to the HDMI port on the front panel, but I don't want cables hanging out the front of the TV (personal preference). Unfortunately, I am no longer able to use the VIERA Link functionality available by connecting all Panasonic components to each other using HDMI cables, but I feel it's a small price to pay for the incredible picture quality acheived by using the HDMI cable to connect the HD Cable Box to the TV. I may yet be able to control everything using the HD Cable Box remote, but I haven't gotten that far yet but I've got Comcast coming on Saturday and hopefully they can let me know if this is possible: let me know if you have a solution.
So here are the components and the cable types used to connect:
I hope this helps someone else.

If your remote also controls the Cable Box you might want to look at its audio settings. Maybe you muted it.
BTW: it would be a good idea to also run video and analog audio from the cable box directly to the TV if it has speakers so you can watch and listen independent of the Onkyo.

Hello,
There are two things that I can suggest.
1-Test your optical cables to make sure they a good on a known working source because they are very fragile and break very easily.
2-Try to eliminate the use of optical output from tv to receiver. There may be a problem from the HDMI to optical conversion at the tv. Instead, try running the audio directly from the source to the receiver, and let the tv deal with video input only.
Hope this helps,
Good Luck.
