Normally this issue happens after installing the a system related software or an upgrading/ reinstalling a operating system. Please read the below steps very carefully and follow the procedure below to resolve the issue.
Download and install the following application updates in the exact order they are given.

2. Video Driver (most recent)
3. Sony Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver
4. Sony Shared Library Update
5. Sony Setting Utilities Update

7. VAIO Launcher Software (S1/S2/AV Buttons)

If the above order does not work, try the order below.

1. Audio Driver (most recent)
2. Video Driver (most recent)
3. Sony Programmable I/O Control Device Driver Utility or Sony Notebook Control Driver
4. Sony Shared Library Update
5. Sony Utilities DLL Update
6. Sony Event Service (If available)
7. Sony AV Mode Button Utility (If available)

SONY is like that you may have to get the update driver form SONY for that unit

check for drivers for your laptop on sonys website

AV Mode button on the Computer will not work if the Sony AV Mode Button Utility is missing or not installed correctly in the Computer.

To resolve the issue, you will need to re-install the Sony AV Mode Button Utility in the Computer.

You can view and download the AV Mode Button Utility from here.

Please download the file to a temporary download folder in the Computer. After that, please open the folder where the file is downloaded and double click the file to begin the installation.
Then, please follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation process. After installation, please restart the Computer for the settings to take the effect. This should fix the issue.

AV, is Audio Visual, thats a way of getting data out, or in, in that AV format. But in your case, The S1 mode is a shortcut button that you can customize to perform numerous tasks such as muting the volume, putting the NR to sleep, etc.
The AV Mode button launches a giant taskbar at the top of the screen that lets you open the DVD software or go on the Internet.

usually you just press Fn plus the change video output button (usually F8 or F5) and then select AV out / TV out

i have a sony viao vgn css220j laptop which key using keboard for booting

same.. i dont know how to do mine. i reformatted my cr420e then my av mode and capture mode isnt working
