Sound like your using a zero turn mower. The brake must be in the off position for you to start moving. If the brake is on then it will die as you describe. Also a bad brake switch can do the same thing.
Check everything is clean. Check the air filter is clean, check that the engine cooling fan, cutting blades and cutting deck are free of grass. Check all the drive belt pulleys to ensure accumulated grass is not jamming anything. Check the fuel filler cap is clean and the breather hole works.
The transmission is shot. A common problem. Mine died after 3 years and 200 hours of use. Estimate to fix was almost $2000. I scapped it and bought a better mower. There was a rtransmission design defect in the RZT series.
