Makita buffer clicking, sparking and burn smell, power loss upon immediate use

So I actually have 2 polishers doing this, 1 is standard makita buffer that I have had for about 4 years with daily use. The other Kustom shop buffer from TCP with only slight use. The makita has had one armature replaced due to burning brushes on one side, this was about 1.5years ago, almost a week ago I noticed it sparking again on and off but it now does it on both sides, burns both brushes a good deal, and as soon as I put any pressure to the buffing pad it slow down to a stop. I have swapped the communtator(big spindle thing) with another makita buffer as mine had a slightly raised piece like it was damaged and pryed up. It worked for a day but it has begun showing the same signs as before and I thoroughly cleaned out any and all hairs, dirt, debris when swapping. The clinking nay be from improper reassembly on my part. As for the KS buffer, like said minimal use and it's design is similar enough. The main thing with this one s the fact that it was in my old car which was flooded about 7-8 months ago. The fact it even works is great. I did test it out after I adequately dried on its own and it seemed fine so its been just sitting around, but with my makita in its current state I took out this KS buffer and it is showing the same signs with burning brushes, sparking and power loss, just no clicking on this one. Took this one apart as well and cleaned it, minus separating the case/armature and the communtator looked OK for the most part though it did have some rust on it. I would really like to save both these tools if possible.

It is a armature problem common to makita products
replacing one armature with a new one does not solve the problem as the fault is a design fault
probably armature not wired heavy enough for continuous running
consider replacing it with a better brand that enables continuous operation

Smell of rubber or plastic burning when in use.

Does your unit have a power nozzle?-- could a belt be slipping at the floor nozzle?

When does the smell begin-- Immediately-- or after running awhile?

Do you feel anything in the power cord that is HOT?-- or the wall plug?
(You are not using an extension cord, right?)

Tell us more about the machine, and when and where you notice the smell the most--

Possible engine blow-up in Tristar vacuum
Posted by skutch on May 28, 2008
5 days ago I was using the vacuum, and after 10 mins or so, I smelled a slight electrical burning smell and i immediately turned it off. i tried again yesterday to use it, and almost immediately after turning it on I heard a pop, saw what looked like blue flames somewhere inside, and again it smelled like it was burning. Of course I immediately turned it off and haven't touched it since. Seems to me the engine is a goner, but I believe it has a lifetime guarantee. So where do I get a new engine? I live in the Dayton, Oh area so if you know of anyone that services Tristars in this area I'd be most appreciative. Thanks!

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.

If you are getting an electrical burning smell it is your vacuum motor and you need to replace it. I am not sure if you have a lifetime warranty or not – most warranties are for 1, 2 or 3 years on electrical parts but I can try to give you a website or phone number to TriStar to see if they can help you on this matter. Question? How old is the vacuum and what is the dop? Listed below are some of the phone #’s that might be able to help you. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
