Need a troubleshooting manual for a craftsman mod. 917.287070

Went out to cut grass and the blades will not engage and when I put it in gear it does not move. Belts are intact. I cleaned the deck of dirt and grass. Still nothing. Just replaced the cable to engage the blades last year. Cable seems to be working.

Blades won't stay engaged in any length of grass

Sounds like a broken shear pin in the drive pulley. Check the belts and see if they are slipping. Broken shear pin will not let the blades spin under pressure. .

Belt. came off... pulling up blade engagement knob nothing seems to happen.....I have trackter up on blocks with blade cutting height at 1 with engine runnig the blade engagement knob switch ...

sounds like a bad PTO, that is the electrical gizmo on the bottom of the engine's driveshaft which engages the bottom pulley, running the deck. you might luck out and find the fuse is blown so follow the wire from the PTO back until you find the fat part in the wire. the fat part is an in line fuse holder with a fuse in it. if the fuse is bad and blows again, you need a new PTO

It sounds to me like a very loose belt or very worn out belt and also an adjustment problem.
