Are you saying the camshaft pulley turns but the camshaft doesn't? If so, do you think the key or the key slot is damaged in pulley or camshaft? Something to check?
to answer your question what makes a cylinder stop working?
low compression, caused by one3 or more of the following,
burnt or cracked valve
blown head gasket
cracked head
hole in piston (accompanied by loud noises and excessive smoke)
a broken valve spring
broken roker arm
collapsed or worn lifter
worn timming chain or belt (this is usually not consistant toward dropping one hole instead it will effect all at once or the cylinder that is dead will be good one second and bad the next)
those are hard mechanical failures next youve got your tune-up related reasons for a cylinder to fail.
bad distributor rotor, cap, sparkplug wire or spark plug
sometimes the distributor itself
a vacuum leak in the vacinity of the cylinder that is failing
a bad intake manifold gasket
or a cracked intake manifold
a defective fuel injector
timing belt broke did you chk the front take off plastic covers and see but very bad to engine if valves bent will cause no start and wont move the valves
Yes they should. The best way to check without getting really technical is to check valve spring height when the cam heel is above the valve (not the lobe) All springs should be the same height. If a valve is bent it will not let the spring come all the way up because the valve stem will not pass through the guide. A better way of checking is to connect a compressed air supply to each cylinder, one at a time and turn the cam so that the intake and exhaust lobes are not on the valves for that cylinder. If air comes through either the intake manifold or exhaust, that valve is bent. If you have any bent valves and you remove the cylinder head, be sure to round over any "eyebrows" on the piston tops using crocus cloth. If you don't and the mark is pronounced, it can become a hot spot that can cause pre-ignition.
i'am a little confused here. are you saying it jumped time and you took it apart and put new timmimg gear and chain in? and don't know if you got marks lined up right, between cam gear and crank gear?
Hi, there is a posibility that it may have bent valves, install new belt ,if your engine misfire or dont start at all ,there are bent valves, be sure to aling the timing marks ,perfect.. good luck
First off, do not overtighten the rocker. You will not make it any tighter and you run the risk of damaging that stud or the rocker. Compare the valve stem height to the other valve stems of the same valve type (exhaust or intake). If it's lower, you may have a broken spring or a stuck valve. Check the push rod against the other push rods, again from the same valve type. If it's lower, and your push rod is OK as you say, you may have a damaged lifter.
