Good question John,
A "P" ..."N" junction is the surface between semi-conductors...
It is the reason I go on incessantly about wearing anti-static wrist straps (droning on)... because the smallest of static sparks can simply ruin that precious P/N junction... without taking ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) precautions.
We "professional" (retired... twice) pack handlers SOMETIMES cheat... and ground our hands before grabbing circuit packs... bt If you were to stop us... and check WHY we risked the 10s of thousands of dollars ... It would be BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT OURS...
With a lightening strike the sky is quite literally the limit.
If you have a PC that LARGELY survived a lightening hit
the MANUFACTURER might seriously be interested in getting that unit back...
but as far as speculating what might be wrong...
EVERYTHING might (certainly ought).
