I have replaced the carb, plug, lines, and both filters. I start the saw on choke, then half choke it runs but when you take it off it falls on its face when you touch the gas.

What am I missing to make this thing idle?

Hi Tyler:
Here's an idea.......
Chain saws (and other 2 cycle motors) will run at idle but will die with throttle
IF THE MUFFLER SCREEN IS PLUGGED
I'd suggest that you remove the muffler, dismantle it if possible, anc clean it thoroughly. The spark arrestor screen could be completely plugged with oily carbon and the motor cannot run at high speed with exhaust back pressure.
To prove this, you could stuff a potato into the exhaust pipe of your friends motorcycle. Guaranteed you will make him crazy.

    OK.
You had not mentioned this so I did.
The next thing I'd be checking would be the carb hi and low speed settings.
Since it dies when you set the choke to off, I'd suspect that it is too lean. Try backing the hi speed by 1/2 turn. Start with choke, go to 1/2 choke, then try to increase speed with more throttle. At the same time, tweak the choke off, then back on if it starts to die. Back off the setting and tweak the choke until you can get full throttle and no choke. Then ***** the hi-speed in until RPM peaks, then starts to drop. Back out to full rpm, then 1/3 turn more.
Adjust low speed to get smooth idle with chain not moving.

What is the make and model.? Is there a 'tick over' idle ***** on the carb.? Usually marked with an (I) does it idle with the chain brake off.? Try increasing the tick over on the carb adjustment

The MS170 has a preset non adjustable carb, however it does have an idle 5crew located on the right hand side of the carb, have you tried turning this clockwise to increase the tick over revs.?

Will only run on full choke

This is a fuel supply issue. Don't use the saw until you find the problem.
Things to check are:
fuel filter, fuel line crack, impulse line, carb needs work, air leak to engine. Etc.

My husqvarna chain saw will run only if choke is at least half way out

this is a sure sign of a fuel blockage some place !! id start with fuel filter and air filter and then look closely at fuel lines for signs of collapsing when running (CAREFULLY!!!!!) then move on to cleaning and resetting carb jets

remember choke richens fuel/air mix so if it needs choke to run then it's being restricted in fuel supply

Chainsaw runs w choke speed up, cuts off when choke is off

There may be a number of errors in the saw, or one of several.
If you have lots of used chainsaw or chainsaw has stood for a long time. Then the problem can be broken crankshaft seal.
Another possible problem is - improperly installed or defective carburetor gasket.

Wont run unless you run it on half choke, also very hard to start.

Thats is definately a lean condition. Can be caused by one or more of the following problems: clogged fuel filter, rotten fuel lines, stiff diaghrams, and clogged carb screen.
Todays fuel is a large cause of the problem so I advise that you go ahead and service the entire fuel system... replace the fuel lines and filter and rebuild the carb. Also if the primer bulb is discolored ( brown, they are clear when new) it should be replaced too.
This is not a difficult task as long as you are patient and take your time. Carb kits run from 7-12 bucks, a filter is about 3 bucks and fuel line is about 2 bucks a foot and a primer buld is just a few bucks.
I reccomend getting extra fuel line. It needs to be very snug in the tank to prevent leaking so cut an angle on the end of the fuel line to get it started then reach in and grab it with hemostats and pull it though the fill opening; then cut it off even and insert the fuel filter; then pull the line back into the tank to desired position making sure that filter lays loosely on the bottom of the tank, then cut to length to attatch to carb

My Brand new Stihl ts420 cut saw wont run full throtle, smokes white, and leaks fuel out of exhaust filter. it runs like the choke is half on.

This sounds like the carb is flooding, there is a rubber tipped needle under the metering side of the carb, this may be leaking, before replacing the needle make sure the air filter is not blocked, replace with a new filter and try again

Chain saw starts hard, have to start it with the choke on all the time wheather the engine is warm or cold. the engine will not idle with out it stalling.i replaced the spark plug, thefuel line, fuel filter...

Sounds like dirt in the carb. Pull carb apart and spray out real well with gum cutter or carb and choke spray. Be sure to remove the needle valve and rinse all holes and ports. Use COPPER wire, like a strand from automotive or speaker wire to run through each hole. rinse everything a few times

Sounds like the carb needs to be rebuilt. Those tiny jets will clog easily and need to be replaced. The diaphragm is also a large part of bogging and dieing. Hope this helps.
