Canon 600ex-rt only fires in full power, no ETTL or variable power?

  • Is it connected to the camera hotshoe?
  • Is it off camera being fired the camera wireless?
  • Is it fired using some type of wireless trigger such as Pocket Wizard and their ilk?
  • Have you tried manual mode? Doing so may give you an idea what is occurring.
  • Are you shooting in a studio or outside? If in a studio maybe the eTTL thinks it needs more power than what you think it does.
99.99% of my flash shooting manual, not eTTL. Why, eTTL is much to inconsistent.

I have a new 580EXII mounted to my Canon 7D. I do not seem to getting the "double flash" (not sure what the technical term is) that I expect and pictures are coming out dark. I'm think...

Holly, I believe you are referring to the pre flash for the ETTL function. both flashes happen so so fast that it looks like one flash. If your pictures seem dark make sure your flash is set to ETTL (press the MODE button unlit ETTL is displayed) this way the flash output is automatic. If it is still too dark you can change the flash output by adjusting the FEL (flash exposure composition) by pressing the button in the center of the dial until +/- is displayed the turn the wheel to select a + exposure (you can adjust this in 1/3 stop increments) then press the center button again. This can be found on pg 14 of the manual
Hope this helps.

Hi, I have a Canon Speedlite 430EX II. I use it with Canon Rebel T1i. I don't really know a lot about using an external flash, I'm just an amateur I must say. I just always have it on automatic mode and...

Okay big breath, The Rebel T1i controls the flash (one reason you turn the flash on and off that's it) so you may have simply switched metering modes, with flash you should be on Evaluative mode.

Another thing is the camera may have been programed for TTL in the Menu E-TTL is the "normal" but if it's changed then the changes stays until you change it back.

I think it's the metering mode but if not you need to go into the camera Menu, Flash Control, External Flash, Flash Mode then select E-TTL. I found this all in a PDF manual of the Rebel T1i pages 139 through 141.

Hope this was a help.

Is a flash compatible with my camera?

Most Canon Digital SLRs use the ETTL metering system. I can't find any decent specs or manuals on the net about this flash whether its ETTL or TTL. I could find models that are specific to Canon and Nikon, so check that first too.

Also be wary of the flashes trigger voltage. A voltage too high might fry the camera when its mounted on the hotshoe, so see if you can find it in the manual.

You can always use this flash off camera in full manual mode. To find out more go to www.strobist.com or go to the Strobist Group on www.flickr.com

Canon speedlite 430EX

Make sure it is not set to manual 'M' on the display. To get it to shoot in ETTL (Through the lens) press the mode button and it should read ETTL in the top left corner. This then means that the light is metered thorugh the lens and you are not relying on the manual settings.

Hope that helps. I had the same problem when i first got my.
By the way a brilliant all round bit of kit. I have traveled the world to some fairly extreme temps and got it wet (Rain, humidity, sea spray to deserts and serious dust) All good.

Good luck
