Which part of ignition switch did you replace ? The key an lock cylinder or the electrical part behind the lock cylinder ? What year ,make an model vehicle do you have ? Most all newer vehicles from 1996 on have anti-theft systems . Is there a security light lit on your dash ? These same vehicles have a starter relay in the under hood fuse box that is turned on or energized by the PCM/ECM - engine computer . The switch the mechanic told you about is the transmission range selector or park neutral safety switch. Your best bet , rather then replacing parts is to take it to a ASE certified repair facility .

Can anyone help on a 98 Civic that won't start?

Dead starter answers, (tests)\
all Fuse check for good (any of 3 ways, look, Ohms or volts tested)key on.
fuse # 41 nor 42 under hood not blown.
the battery can be tested in any shop with load tester. ,lugs not bad rusty or loose on car.

the starter on car can be hot wired jump started. keys in pocket , jump tiny terminal to huge lug and starter spins fast as will the crank shaft fast and will not start the engine keys are in your pocket or far from car.
now 2 things good battery and starter
some civics Rare my have IMMO(bilizer)?
the remote starter cut relay pin 2 must go to 12vdc crank or relay is bad or PCM the controls it ,sees gross input error to it.
the tests are all 2 man test from key switch to this relay (cranking)
you do know there are 2 fuse boxes, one dash(cab) and 1 engine bay,
fuse 31 under dash box blown
OMG honda's are odd, the starter relay is space relay float in space under dash. not in the box of fuses.
i am reading your real service manual to find this.
some civics the security module here., but says 1998 up but gee a late 98 car may have it.
photos to follow , a voltmeter finds all this easy with service manual.
that is, no key security system there.

Won't start with key what could be the problems

a Chevy (got A/t trans or manual mt trans,?) sold with both new.
dead starter 101:
will not crank
so battery is good, this old never will it be.
so Jumper cable jump starts fail, ??????
its not a NOSTART, it is a NO CRANK.> the later is easy former not. easy even 50 causes of no starts.

yes the starter is GOOD is/ was good. as you proved hot wired it.
the causes are:
fuses blown or IGN fuse 50amp blown.?
Key switch bad.
starter relay bad. (the schematics online show no such thing)
that relay missing means the key switch can fail easy.
TRANNY rules.
PRNDL switch bad, , crank in Neutral now ,foot on brake..!
if M/T box, the clutch switch is bad, top of clutch pedal.
the clutch must be depressed or will never ever crank over.
but?
if shifter lever will not move, brake lamps are dead or fuse to it,.
starter motor bad,(not is it not you hot wired it and works.
Jumper cable jump cranking fails. (assumed)
the schematic on this car shows only 4 parts to fail, besides wires.
assumes battery good, or jump started cables fails.
fuse blown.
keyswitch bad (easy due to no starter relay)_
PRNDL or clutch switch bad.
starter.bad no it is not. and engine not seized no it is not.
I use volt meter to find the point of failure and never not found it.
wires bad.
sure!
2 battery cables. ,4 ends not loose or rusty.
or
some one put alarm on car and hacked cars wiring under dash and to the starter, or worse , hacks have no end,. and only tech that sees those hacks knows what to do, he removes the hack and puts the cars wiring back to OEM factory stock condition.
or worse, remote starter kits hacked in.
use a voltmeter and the schematic and find it.

Have a 2002 tahoe with a gas leak and a problem with the flashers took for repair fixed but went into theft mode and wont start how can it be started

you can try this ,Try and do 30 Minute Learn Procedure
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Attempt to start the engine, and then release the key to ON, vehicle will not start.
Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
Turn OFF ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes, the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock? Sensor Data Code and/or Passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
IMPORTANT: The vehicle learn the Passlock? Sensor Data Code and/or Password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock? Sensor Data Code and/or password.
With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles.

I put a starer and she still wont start all i get is a 'click' sound

Step 1:

First check the starter relay fuse. Replace it even if the fuse looks good.

Step 2:

If you are sure the fuse is not the problem then ensure that the battery if fully charged and is working properly. Turn on the interior light then turn on the headlights. The interior light should dim momentarily then go bright again. If it stays dim check and charge the battery.

Step 3:

If the battery is not the problem, check if the battery is grounded properly. The ground wire is connected to the negative terminal of the battery. Make sure it has a good connection to the engine block, i.e. there must be no rust, no paint and it must be fastened tightly. Also ensure that all heavy connections are tight and secure, as any looseness will cause the clicking sound.

Step 4:

If it still does not start, jump the starter's two heavy solenoid terminals with a screwdriver. FOR YOUR SAFETY THE CAR MUST BE IN NEUTRAL OR PARK WHEN YOU DO THIS because the starter should jump and turn now! The ground is the problem if it turns.

Step 5:

If it still only clicks the solenoid may be faulty. Replace this if you did not get a new solenoid with the starter.

Step 6:

If the solenoid is new then check the neutral safety switch located on the transmission. To find the switch follow the cable from the shifter to the transmission. A faulty switch will prevent the engine from starting.

Step 7:

If all these steps fail you will have to ask a professional to resolve this problem because specialized equipment will be required for perform further diagnostic tests.

I replaced my battery this week on my 99 Yukon. Truck started fine for several days. Now it won't turn over, at all. All the equipment inside works, so the battery is not dead - it just wont ever try...

Check for power at the small wire at the starter with the key inthe crank position. If there is power than the starter is bad or the connections at the battery are not good. If there is no power put the trans in neutral and check for power again. If there is still no power let me know and I will get you some more info on trouble shooting the ignition switch and the PRNDL switch.

Replaced transmission, truck wont start

Frank,
There are a couple of things that I would check.
Make sure you have continuity to the neutral safety switch.
Do the lights come on in the dash when you try and start it ?
Do your lights turn on ?
Make sure you did not blow the main BAT fuse.
Do you have 12 volts at starter ?, how about when you turn the ignition to start, do you have 12 volts at solenoid on starter ?
Please let me know.

Chevy cavalier wont start randomly! makes one click and a humm sound my lights come on the radio comes on but the car just wont start, ive had battery replaced along with the ignition switch, fuel pump,...

Ok then, from your description and the
make/model/year of the car you have there,
it appears you've reset the VATS.

The car's security immobilizer
reader at the key switch
does not recognize the coded
chip in the ignition key any longer.

You can try to put the key
in the ignition, turn to the on position &
wait at least 10 min like that.
(Do not turn off the key switch before
10 minutes as elapsed!)

Once done, the key is re-programmed and
should allow the fuel injectors to work again.
The car would start now if corrected.

In some cases, the VATS (GM'S VEHICLE ANTI THEFT SYSTEM)
will re learn the code this way, and will then
allow the restart, however if this does not work,
then you can simply tow it to any GM vehicle dealer
to have the service department re code it.

There is a permanent solution though.
Adding the PLJX Self learning Bypass module (59.95)
will bypass the PASSLOCK system in your vehicle
for good. See this at www.PASSLOCK2.com

Good luck I hope method 1 does the trick!

Here is the 30 min relearn:

Ignition keys relearn takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start. 3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. 6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password. 7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles. Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself.
