1.) you never check your transmission fluid and it is low. Check it and fill according to instructions in your car's owner's manual. Check your oil, while you're at it. Get your dad, boyfriend, husband, or female companion to teach you how to check your car's oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid, and any other hydraulic cylinder fluid. All adults should know how to do this.

IF YOU DO NOT LEARN TO DO THESE THINGS, YOU CAN COUNT ON VERY EXPENSIVE CAR REPAIRS. Repair shops will love you. I have a foolish brother who wrecks his automobiles' engines repeatedly because he says "I shouldn't have to do this stuff".

2.) there is a broken linkage cable or rod.

3.) a bad electrical connection.

4.) you trashed the transmission by putting it in gear while rolling in opposite direction of desired travel

It is likely you will need help with this. It is likely you will need a repair shop. Get help from friends and family, BEFORE going to a repair shop. Look for an online ratings service such as Angie's list or Yahoo yellow pages to make sure you don't go to a rip-off joint.

Good luck Kimberly!

1999 Mercury Sable transmission had water in it. I replaced everything and filter. Now it shifts back and forth from first to second. Do I need to replace the transmission?

Replacing the whole lot would be a quick fix, but if you got water in it, it will take a few flushes to get it all out. You may also have internal electric solenoids that have shorted out. Diagnostics with a pro grade scan tool computer can diagnose this.

Mercury sable gear shiftier jammed in park

Found this for a '93
Check that the brake lights work. The neutral park solenoid needs to see an input from the brake light switch before it allows the transmission to be taken out of park. If the brake lights don't work check the switch and fuses. If not the solenoid that allows the shift linkage out of park may have failed. Nearly every car has a mechanical override to allow the transmission to be shifted out of Park.

And this for a 2002
More than likely the BOO (brake on/off) switch located on the brake pedal, or it's connector is the problem. Check to see if the brake lights are working. If not, you can disconnect the BOO switch and jump the wires together. If the brake lights come on then, it should shift out of park.

So your's should be the same.

I have a whining noise coming from my 1999 Mercury Sable. Starts at about 20 MPH and increases getting the loudest around 40-60 mph then holds steady, have shifted to nuetral and whining stays. I believe...

Could be anything connected with the front wheels.
So that includes hub-wheel bearings, axle joints, the differential gears, and the transmission.

1996 MERCURY SABLE 65,000 MILES ON SPEEDO. TRANSMISSION STARTED TO SLIP ALSO RUST UNDER VEHICLE. LINCOLN MERCURY STATED REPAIR WOULD COST 4 TO 5 THOUSAND DOLLARS AND YOU MIGHT AS WELL JUNK THE VEHICLE

Transmission problems are an issue with Sables. If you Google transmission and Mercury Sable you will come to quite a few complaints. There are actually a few posts on this website where folks are having issue too. Personally a cheap o-ring in my 1999 Sable went out resulting in a $1800 transmission repair bill. I literally gave the car away about three years ago. In almost 20 years of owning vehicles the two years I had the Sable was the most expensive and busiest in the way of repairs.
