I have a heat pump and it the outside unit seems to cut on and off a lot especially when it first comes on.

The fan will not be turning and it sounds like the compressor turns on and off every 15 seconds for about 10-15 times before the fan runs. The installer changed the capacitor. Did not help. Then he changed a circuit board but it is still doing it. Is this normal?

I took a photo of the specs.

The model# is fuzzy but its not one of the more efficient of the heat pumps. If it is short cycling the low pressure switches on r410a freon usually open at about 40-50 psig. I'm betting its low on freon or has a reversing valve issue(not to common). You have a 2010 model Carrier. May state another name but its a carrier style. Maybe have a second opinion from a Carrier sponsored HVAC company? There must be a control circuit that can be found causing the short cycle, especially if its cycling at 10-15 sec intervals. Or maybe the installer is not used to r410a freon pressures and he's thinking r22 and don't realize its low on freon? Tough to say

Not normal at all. Is it a new system that the installer is having trouble with. Is it a high efficiency heat pump(16seer and up?) The compressor is cycling due to a malfunction. If the installer is fustrated , they might start changing parts just to see if they can problem solve by not locating the problem. This is the difference between installer and a service technician! Ask if there is a service man available to help unless the installer is a qualified tech also, BIG DIFFERENCE! Compressor usually will "short cycle" due to a low freon charge, high amperage, improperly installed components such as a start assist kit(can cause high amps), fault at the start kits potential relay(high amps), wrong or poor supply voltage, closed pump down valve(s), damaged copper tubing inside the unit or at copper line set that comes from your house, fault at expansion valve or restricted orifice if it doesn't have an ex. valve(will cause high pressure), restricted filter drier, miswired or wrong set up(if high efficiency). The o.d. fan is probably controlled by high pressure and will not engage until it reaches a certain pressure so if its not working until the comp cycles 10-15X its probably not a high psi fault. High(excessive) amperage or a low pressure issue. If its low on freon a low pressure switch will stop the comp, the pressure will internally equalize and that will allow the low pressure switch to reset, starting the cycle again. I've seen the heat pumps reversing valve fault on a new system before(3 days used) but that's rare. With the info given that's all I can imagine. Just make sure a service tech is on the job. I had to help the installers many times. They know how to install and start, but a service tech knows, is supposed to know, how to troubleshoot and "fine tune". If the installer don't have help, or a boss who can help, call someone else or just be patient. We all see new issues that we are dumbfounded by.

I called the company that installed it again. Actually, it was an insurance job. My other unit was stolen and they put the entire system in. So, they have tried replacing capacitor and a circuit board and they are supposed to be back tomorrow. Thanks for the information.

The company is scheduled to come out today. Thank you for your suggestions. I will pass them on to the technician. I am a computer specialist/troubleshooter/network admin with Windows, Mac, and Linux. If i can be of any assistance in those areas in the future, let me know. I TS hardware and software issues. Networked the pc's at our location before wireless was available.

Heat Pump Blowing Cold

Unless you just installed or had the thermostat installed recently, I would not point at the thermostat as the problem. With what you have described I would suggest have your units serviced as it sounds like a loss of charge, or failed defrost control board. The "Aux" comes on when the unit is using secondary heating (electric heat strips). That occurs when the demand temperature (what you set it to) in Heat mode is more than the current room temperature, usually ~2-4 degrees higher. Also happens in defrost mode. Defrost is a heat pump cycle that melts any build up of ice on the condenser unit (outside unit). That process is simply the unit running in cool mode which will heat up the outside unit to melt any ice. Defrost cycles vary with manufacture but usually you can tell if is in defrost by looking at the outside unit, during defrost the unit will be warm or hot sometimes there is steam and the compressor will be running but not the fan. Defrost only happens on heat pumps in "Heat" mode. Rheem has a 10 yr compressor and parts warranty, so call the installer or Rheem authorized service company.

My Goodman gsh103301ab. The fan in the outside unit will not come on. The heat is still coming out the the vents but, just don't think that sounds right. Is this suppose to happen?

If it's in cool mode, the outside fan definitely should run to remove the heat. If it's heat mode the outside fan will start only when pressure build up. If it's problem with condenser fan definitely the breaker or fuse will be blown when the amphs increased.

Fedder Heat Pump not Running

you can check your heat pump on the outside by turning off the power and listening to see if it makes a whoosh sound. and then turn it back on you should hear it kick in. Is the outside unit running? Sounds like an electrical problem maybe in the breaker or the contactor on the inside of the unit. This is where the 24 volts from the thermostat call to the 240 volts to kick on the condenser fan and compressor. Be real careful in messing with this because of the high voltage.

Heat Pump Stops Working only in the Early Morning

When the unit does what you say does the fan motor outside stop also , if it does that means it is in defrost mode and should kick back over to normal after the system heats up the coil enough

Ruud heat pump question

Does the air handler take a minute or two to start, this would be normal so that it doesn't blow cool air into the house before the unit is warmed up. If not could be the fan relay is weak and needs replacing. As far as the outside unit it sounds like you need to check the refrigerant. In cooling they are 70/150 psi. This should be checked in cooling mode, once you turn it to heating mode the pressures switch bring heat inside the house instead of out. I hope this helps.

Ruud heat pump high pressure cut off problem

That's going to be in your installer configuration. Check and make sure the G terminal has a wire connected to it at the tstat , and that connection it tight. In the configuration menu, make sure it is set for a heat pump, elected heat. It seems to me that the tstat doesn't know its connected to a heat pump. Should be able to locate aodel # for tstat on the back of it. And ask Mr. Google for a manual, if you don't have 1. Hope this helps!

Heating problems

It sounds like the unit is going into a defrost cycle, which is normal for heat pumps and means all is working ok when it gets around 35 or colder they start to do this more often when the red light goes back off , the outdoor fan should come back on. You may also notice steam (may look like smoke) coming from outdoor unit. Is that what happens??
