Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd,press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart
(note after you have loaded the operating system you must go back and change the first boot device to your hard drive)
The BIOS is AMI. Under ADVANCED SETUP:
The options listed for 1st,2nd ,3rd Boot device include:
IDE-0 means Pri master ?
IDE-1 means Pri slave ?
IDE-2 means Sec master ?
IDE-3 means Sec slave ?

Master/Slave designation is determined by jumpers on IDE drives. Most drives have adequate markings on them to identify these jumper positions. If not marked clearly, you will need the manufacturer's data to determine that designation.
If you are curious about a working system just power-up in set-up mode (usually by depressing (f1-or-f2) during boot-up sequence, your system-bios will display this information for you.

How do i set my drive to slave when the four jumpers are labeled DS, CS, PK, Rvsd?

use the cable select pin option. as long as you have an operating system already installed and running , the cs selection will automatically recognise the add on as a slave drive.

When installing a Maxtor Quantum Fireball Plus AS 20.5-GB hard drive as a second drive on a PC. You want the drive to be the slave drive, and you know what that you must change the current jumper settings....

DS=drive select meaning selected drive by the bios CS=Cable select meaning if you hook it to the second plug so set the jumper to CS and hook drive to the second cable if its is ide drive which that is what it sounds like the drive is!!

I need to dump the contents of a Quantum Fireball Plus LM onto my Dell Studio Desktop (Vista). Do I need to set the drive jumpers to make this an auxilary drive before booting up my Dell?

it just depends in what position you hook it up ...on the cable ...if you have a normal ata /ide master ...just get it like it is ...but if you will set in a slave position you have to set the pin for it in the same manner .....
the default for the master is in the first fromn the left ( near ata ) one jumper in ds position ...first from the left ...
FOR SLAVE : IS THE 3RD FROM THE LEFT ...IN THE PK POSITION SECOND NEAR THE POWER
but I understood that this position really do not have a working value and the setting can be plane no jumper at all for slave ..

Old maxtor harddrive

Most Maxtor Drives have jumper setting so that if "Jumper 50" is set; the two pins farthest from the power jack, is Master Drive. No pin jumper set, Slave or Cable Select. I hope this helps.

Hard drives

If you set it to CS and then plug it into the second connector it should be on the slave. The end one is always master. Sometimes you just have to do a trial and error deal. Go into your bios and set your hard drive dectection to auto and on your bootup screen it should show the drives. Even in the bios once it is connected right the bios will tell you where it is recognized at. If all else fails, go to www.maxtor.com and look for your model hard drive and see what the settings are there.
