If it can print from the internet, it is working properly. I would disconnect the printer from the computer, uninstall the drivers and reboot twice. Reinstall the drivers and hook up the printer when instructed. Make sure that you select this as the default printer. (unless, of course, you have another as default)
sounds like its a expired ink issue. on alot of the hp photosmart printers the ink has a expirey date on the carts the best solution would be to contact hp and chances are they will send you free carts if your ink has been expired. when a black ink is almost out most of the time it trys to draw ink from the color carts mixing to make the appropriate color.

Hit MENU
Select "TOOLS" by hitting OK
Select "Clean Cartridges" by hitting OK
Carefully review printed output for white lines on printed areas
If white lines appear:
Select "SECOND level cleaning" by hitting OK

Select "THIRD level cleaning" by hitting OK.
