2005 PT Convertible - Beginning two weeks ago a strong odor appeared. When we open the car door in the morning the smell is overwhelming. I checked the carpet, upholstry, rear window deck, and trunk carpet but nothing is wet. I thought it could be the a/c ducts but that would not account for the odor when we get into the cold car in the AM. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

I had the same problem with my 2005 Honda Accord. I would happen only sometime but is a distant odor I smell from inside the cabin. Older Hondas sometimes have gasket problems that leak small amounts of oil onto the exhaust manifold. Ask the mechanic to go check the valve cover gaskets. They replaced a new gasket to my car at the Honda dealer and I haven't smelled that burning odor since then. Good luck.
Did u notice the smell right after oil change ?I so they might have spilled some on the exhaust manifold or on the motor itself ... If this is a strong odor return to where the oil was changed and ask them to double check everything they didif it wasnt them maybe they can find out what is indeed making the smell.. good luck hope this helps
excessive fuel pressure
breach in the vapor canister assembly (most likely)... this is near the gas tank
quick disconnect line near the tank is breached
filler neck is breached
You didn't state if you used your A/C often but that is the most likely source. If you use your A/C on maximum it does not allow any fresh air in the vehicle and just recycles the air over and over this allows for bacteria and mold in the system even though you don't see it. run your A/C on min. or medium for a few days this should clear up your problem.
neither one of these would cause gas to leak. sure it is not coolant ? if you think it is gas it is not safe to drive car as it could catch on fire. possible cause would be a leaking injector.
Since you didnt notice any change in the performance of your engine, ill presume there's nothing wrong with your fuel injectors.
look for moisture around your gas tank cap, the hose and clamps going down the tank, around the fuel gauge sending unit of your tank. have your fuel line checked from the tank to your fuel injection pump, give particular importance around the connections of your fuel filter, fuel pump, and the return hose from your fuel injection going back to your tank.
Diesel do emit strong hazardous odors that may stick on carpets inside your car.
Thanks but I should have mentioned the odor in mildew.
