The Meriva has a known fault with the electronic power steering rack which causes some weird other issues.
The replacement part and labour is expensive - I had one and the price in the UK was around £1200 for the repair.
Thankfully we had a media push in this country and the pressure made General Motors (Vauxhall/Opel/Chevrolet) do the fix for free, try calling your nearest dealer and see if they'll do this for you Meriva 02 09 Power Steering Problems

You need a code reader(expensive) or a Vauxhall/Opel specialist unless anybody reading this knows what the code means. Have you tried the owners club forums?

never buy a car that has no support !
buy a car that has a dealer in town! (so there are parts)
all cars break, so expect that.
and the tranny is overheating.
or buy car that is more simple. or has stick shift with non of this BS.
buy car that local mechs can fix,("ask them first") then buy.

my answer is for far afield car owners. not big city.

it could be a worn steering idler if the rubber has gone around it shaft it will rattle and be hard to control the sterring.
