I have no clue about the grinding but most likely the smell is burning lint. I'd recommend vacuuming out as much lint as you can. The better choice is open case and vacuum all of the lint.

remove the front cover and drum and clean out all lint including lint filter blower wheel housing and all exhaust vent piping from inside dryer to outside discharge,if this is done and it persists, replace the cycling switch and high-limit thermostat as these may have welded themselves and can no longer control heat

Wont start, smells like something is burniing

if its electric burning smell, its either a overheating motor, capacitor or both or burnt connections, sounds like a motor problem,it will be very hot to touch if its failing, check capacitor though as it could be causing motor to overheat, rating of cap is on side

Maytag Neptune Dryer not heating

Q - My electric dryer runs but will not heat, what could stop my dryer from heating?
A - Things that could stop a electric dryer from heating:
- house fuse or breaker ( needs two of them ), heating element, burnt wire, thermostat(s), thermal fuse ( not all models ), motor heat switch, timer, selector switch, burnt power cord/plug.
A ohm meter test for these parts is here.
