John deere 757

I just replaced No. 1 head and have zero compression. This replacement should not be that difficult. Have I missed something obvious?

Bad rings may be the problem. Put a few drops of oil in spark plug hole. THEN TEST IT.

SOURCE: How do I remove the PTO clutch from a John Deere

Locate and disconnect the power supply cord from the clutch. Remove the bolt, washer and retainer from the center of the clutch, It should now slide off the end of the crankshaft provided you have previously removed anything such as body parts or braces that would be in the way. In some instances penetrating oil must be used to help free it up. When you reassemble it, it is a good idea to use a little bit of anti-seize on the engine shaft in case you have to remove it in the future.

John deere 757 zero turn when clutch is engaged it pulls down battery until it disengages itself! Battery is new and does charge when clutch is not engaged! Any ideas? Thanks

Likely a higher than normal impedance in the return path at the voltage regulator. The metal frame of the regulator is the return path via engine metal/block to battery negative. Make sure the regulator mounting screws are tight and free from corrosion.

If no problems found, further testing will be necessary to rule out a failing regulator. Comment for further assistance.

John deere edger E35 kawaski motor fa130d spark is good. if i put starter fluid in it will NOT fire. Tried a new spark plug and more starter fluid. Engine won't fire.

You have spark and fuel, that leaves compression and timing.

To test compression remove spark plug, place thumb or finger tightly over spark plug hole and pull starter cord. If your finger is pushed off the hole with pffft sound then likely compression is sufficient.

If no compression then likely a valve is stuck or a valve guide has moved out of place. Was it ran out of oil? If yes the engine rod may have snapped.

Timing will only be wrong if the flywheel key has sheared. To check timing requires a special tool or removal of the cylinder head. It's a simple flat head engine so not a difficult task to remove head and the gasket is reusable. Or just remove flywheel cover and flywheel and do a visual inspection of the key.
