Zoom problem The camera automatically zooms when I turn it on.

  • photogeek Nov 15, 2007

We have the same problem. Only way to get it to stop zooming is to manually hold the wide angle button on the back of camera while recording. Can it be fixed?

The problem that you are experiencing is a common complaint on the Canon Gl2 camcorder. There are two different common parts that can cause zoom problems. One is that the zoom control on the side grip goes faulty and will need to be replaced, this repair parts and labor is $199. The second problem is a bad flex PCB and this repair parts and labor is $306. Both of these repairs include cleaning and servicing. The return shipping is free. We also guarantee the entire camcorder for 6 months parts and labor. If you have any other questions please feel free to call, email or post you questions here.

Sincerely,

My camera started to zoom out recently all by itself. The zoom control would take over and do whatever it wanted without me touching it! It would zoom out constantly, rendering the camera useless.

I was about to buy a new camera, but figured I would try to fix this one first, since I really wasn't in the mood to drop $300 dollars.

Here's what I did, I took out my trusty can of WD40 with straw attached. I encircled the zoom switch with some kleenex to contain any overspray. Then I gave the zoom switch, the smallest blast of WD40 I could muster. I cleaned up the overspray with the kleenex and worked the switch back and forth for a while. Lo and behold the problem is fixed.

One warning, you may ruin the camera, however, if your zoom doesn't work, the camera is not much use other than a miniDVD player for your tv.

I have the same problem. I hoped it was down to the zoom button on the top of the camera. I dismantled it and eventually got to the button but couldn't find anything loose/damaged or needing cleaned.

Did you ever find a solution?

the zoom control button is malfunctioning. try to clean the contact. check the resistant of the variable carbon. if it is not open, try to adjust the contact point away from the damaged area.

Digital zoom do not work well. automatic zoom work 1/10 time and not very good

Unfortunately digital zoom never works well. It's best to turn digital zoom off in the menu and never use it.
This is for any camera!

How to achieve full zoom with a Nikon 55-200mmf/4-5.6G ED lens?!

1) What camera body are you using?

2) I do not understand your assertion that it automatically zoomed in. Zooming is a manual function. The automatic functions of your lens pertain only to focusing on of the subject so that your picture is sharp and ensuring that the correct amount of light is admitted so that you have a correct exposure.

3) Are you sure you were turning the zoom ring and not the f-stop ring? The zoom ring is labeled 200 on one end of the scale and 55 on the other. It is also the widest ring on the lens barrel. When you rotate it, the physical length of the lens will lengthen as you rotate it clockwise (viewed from behind the camera) and shorten as you rotate it counter-clockwise.

4) For reference, at 200mm the angle of view on your lens should be 10 degrees and at 55mm about 40 degrees.

Combining zoom modes for closer long range photos

Hi, if you go into camera setup and make sure that the digital zoom is on then the camera will automatically go seemlessley from optical to digital zoom when the maximum optical zoom is reached. The digital zoom can only be used in certain modes, so if you cannot change the digital zoom to on because it is 'greyed out' change the camera shooting mode. please can you clarify the second request. Kind regards

Zoom malfunction

I had exactly the same problem. You just need to smash once with your hand on the bottom of your camera (it looks that this works for all canon cameras).

Super Zoom

In addition to the optical zoom, this camera is equipped with a super zoom and digital zoom for taking telephoto and wide-angle shots. The super zoom and digital zoom cannot be used at the same time. Super zoom is used to extend the optical zoom up to 14× magnification. However, the resolution is automatically fixed at 1600 ×1200. Digital Zoom is used to extend the maximum optical zoom to approximately 40x. However, pictures taken with the digital zoom may appear grainy. Camera shake is likely to occur at these higher magnifications, please see “camera shake” question for further details on this.
