Water pressure is very low on all Hayward Multi-flo settings (including recirculate). Is this a sand problem or a pump problem?

It is a Hayward sp714TE and the sand hasn't been changed for 12 years. But the puzzling part is that the water pressure from the nozzles in the pool is still very low even on the recirculate setting which is supposed to bypass the filter.

You need a rebuild kit for the valve and possible a sand change. Sand should be changed ever 3 - 5 years or so depending on overall pool conditions.

The gasket inside the valve is out of place and therefore allowing water to leak out the waste port. Use a gokit to replace all the gasket/orings and you should stop the leak.

If the flow is still bad, inspect the sand and change it if necessary.

SOURCE: pool sand filter noisy only on filter setting and

Something is stopping your water flo before the filter otherwise you would show pressure on the filter guage. The only thing that I can think of would be if you had taken your backwash valve apart and reassembled it in the wrong position. Ether put the handle on backwards or mounted the top out of place. Hope this helps, good luck.

SOURCE: What setting should I have my Hayward Sand Filter ...

Your pool filter should be set on "filter" for normal vacuuming. If you have a heavy debris load or an extremely dirty pool, you might want to vacuum with the "waste" setting, if your filter has one.

The model number you give is for the multi port valve. Did you need the valve manual or the filter manual? Go to haywardnet.com for their full line and manuals. Here is the link for the SP0714 valve at their site. It is in PDF format...

Hayward sand filter

Reference your pressure gauge as the 12:00 position. Going clockwise-
12:00 is Filter, normal running position
2:00 is Waste, water goes from pool and exits the waste line, bypassing filter.
4:00 is Closed, used only when servicing equipment
6:00 is Backwash, reverses water through the filter and goes out the waste line.
8:00 is Recirculate, water bypasses filter and returns to pool.
10:00 is Rinse, water goes through filter and exits to waste line, used briefly after backwashing to clear sediment from filter.
Note that the "pointer," not the handle that you grab, indicates which setting you are on.

My pressures low

Low water volume will cause low pressure. Check for any obstructions in the suction libe and/or minor leaks that will cause the pump to **** air. If everything checks out, make sure the water is actually flowing thru the sand. If you suspect the water is bypassing thru the multi-port valve or a tunnel in the sand: pour a cup of flour in the skimmer, if you see it return thru the returns, you have your verification.

No water in pump after running for short time

suction side leak... your grabbing air somewhere in the suction line.... take a hose at low pressure and with the pump running put it over various parts of the suction line... including your pump lid... if the problem goes away and you have no more air in the pump then you know what your problem is
