try taking a small flashlight and hold it to one edge of the screen on an angle and see if you can see a faint image of the screen. if so your backlight is gone.
When the screen turns on does it show anything or does it turn on and go to black?
If it goes to straight black it could be two things typically. 1. The LCD screen is having an issue. Connection cable / LCD screen itself. 2. The Graphics Card has gone out.
think I may finally have the answer for the "black screen of death" for the 42" Polaroid LCD televisions. I was having the same issue with the screen going black after a couple minutes of being on. I would shut it down then turn it back on and it would work again for 5-10 minutes. On the "power board" which is the board on top, there is a little red light that turns on when the screen would go black. above that there are 4 little switches, the lower on says BURN. I simply switched that over and the television has been working for 2 days for 8 hours + each day. Hope this help. Let me know
This means that you have a broken backlight. If your monitor is still under warranty you should call to have it repaired/replaced, or purchase a new monitor.
Take a flashlight and shine it on the screen. If you can see an image, you probably need to replace the power inverter board. It supplies power to the backlight.
mhaupt, Tell me if it is both BLACK and BLANK or just BLACK after you do the flashlight trick !!! This is no joke!! understand?? When the screen goes black hold bright flashlight where you saw an image on the screen (icon or win start button) and tell me what you see or don't see!!
