Music files being deleted from saved slideshow

I have no problem creating a slideshow with Slideshow Expressions software, however, when I try to return to the slideshow at a later date to burn more copies, it tells me that the music files are no longer attached and asks me if I want to relink the music files. The music is still on my computer, but I'm unable to find it to have it put back on the slideshow. Any ideas on how to fix this issue will be greatly appreciated.

I haven't encountered this problem myself, but maybe I can offer some assistance. Make sure that your computer meets all the requirements for the software (given on the box). According to the User's Guide (section 3-3), the following music formats are supported: mp3, wma, wav, ra. I recommend contacting Individual Software's technical support people. You have to register your product to be able to get help, but it is free and could be worth it: individualsoftware.com. From: 11407336.

There could be a number of reasons why you're having trouble adding music files to your slide shows. First I'll lay out the procedure and afterwards I'll give some hints / a link to individualsoftware.com where problems with audio files are discussed.

The procedure (adding music files using SlideShow Expressions):
The programme opens and you are automatically in tab 1: "Add Media".
Click on "Create New Slide Show". Click on "Add Photos"; tell the programme where the photos are, select them, insert them, change their positions if necessary.
Now:
1. Click on "Next" at the bottom of the screen.
2. At "Soundtrack", click "Select Audio Files", then tell the programme where the music files are located on your computer, click to highlight a specific music file, click on "Open". The music file you selected now appears in the Soundtrack window. Repeat this until all the music files you want appear in the Soundtrack window. (You can delete any of them by clicking to highlight any specific file and then click on the little rubbish can icon.) As you go along, the total audio time for the slide show / chapter is displayed as well as the "Duration of Slide Show".
3. In the "Duration" section, you have the option to set the length of time you want per slide (seconds) - usually 8 to 10 seconds is best. (All your slides will follow this instruction; you can't set the duration of individual slides to a different time.) At "Auto-Fit to Soundtrack", you alter the duration of the slides to fit the length of the soundtrack. (This cancels out the previous seconds-per slide setting.) You must therefore choose music tracks that, when added together, will approximately span the whole length of the slide show and then you can fine-tune this by clicking the "Auto-Fit to Soundtrack" option.
4. When you are satisfied with your choice of music tracks and the length of your slide show, click on "Finish".

Issues with music files when using SlideShow Expressions
A.
According to the User Guide (section 3-3) - included on the install disc as a pdf file - the supported audio formats are: mp3, wma, wav, ra. Make sure that your computer also meets all of the requirements (on the box).
B.

Photo & Video Expressions is not compatible with audio files that have been protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM) functionality. Most audio files purchased online through Internet music retailers like iTunes, Urge, or Rhapsody are encrypted with some form of DRM. Similarly, audio files that have been extracted from a CD or DVD (the process known as "ripping") using certain media applications (iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc.) often have default settings that encrypt the files extracted.

There is no way to used DRM audio files purchased from online music retailers with Photo & Video Expressions. However, if you want to used music and audio files that you have extracted from your CD collection, then all you have to do is change the ripping setting in your media application before you extract the files to your computer.
Go to the following site to read about how to change your ripping settings:

http://www.individualsoftware.com/support/frequently_asked_questions.html

Type your question OR (below):

"Photo & Video Creativity": choose "SlideShow Expressions" from drop-down menu, click "Go".

A window appears with options on problems, e.g. "Why aren't my audio files showing?"; "Why won't my music files work?" Click to read.
The best of luck to you. From: 11407336.

Yes, it seems that SlideShow Expressions specifically has problems with some downloaded music files. You can read about it, and try to find a solution, at Individual Software's website (also try their free online technical support):

I found the following information on Individual Software's website. Apparently, music downloaded from the Internet, or bought online, for example using iTunes, may cause problems with SlideShow Expressions. I include a link for more reading; go to 'frequently asked questions': http://support.individualsoftware.com.

Here is some of the info:

Why won't my music files work in Photo & Video Expressions? [SlideShow too, I guess]

Suggestions are given on how to change ripping settings in iTunes and Windows Media Player.

iTunes

  2. Click the Advanced tab in the Preferences window.
  3. Click the Importing tab.
  4. Click the Import Using drop down arrow, and click MP3 Encoder.
  5. Click the Settings drop down arrow, and click the desired sound quality.
(NOTE: The higher the kbps (kilobits per second), the larger the file.)
  6. The Custom... setting allows you to adjust more specific settings.
  7. Click the OK button when you are finished.
  8. Click the CD title in the left pane of the iTunes window.
  9. Click the checkbox for each track to rip, and then click the Import CD button in the lower right corner of the iTunes window.
  10. Once the extraction process has completed, you can use these audio files in your Photo & Video Expressions project.

Can;t get the software to write the slide show to a DVD

Two things: 1. Make sure that you chose the writer drive (burn to DVD) and not "hard drive" in the options window that appears when clicking on "Produce" and then on "Burn to disc". 2. SlideShow Expressions can develop problems when the photos are too large and when the project your trying to burn is quite large as well. What is too large? I can only speak from own experience. I found that once a project gets into the range of 400 or more photos (total) my writer fails to write. (I've burned projects containing up to 388 successfully; photos at original size) However, this can be solved by resizing your photos. I have a project with 466 photos (10 chapters) that wouldn't burn to disc. I then resized the photos so that every single one was under 500 KB. It worked: burning is now successful. Resizing doesn't necessarily mean that the quality of your photos will drop. I used Microsoft Office Picture Manager and, really, visually there is no difference between the original photos and the resized photos in the slideshow project. Experiment with photo size. Maybe another size works for you. It is also known that chosing the archive option (having the original photos and music burned to the disc) can upset the burning process - but only really when it's a very large project. Also, you could be using the wrong type of disc. Try DVD+R.
