Land Rover Discovery 1996 3.9 V8i Cooling Problems

This started about 2 months ago, the car would lose water or bubble up and out of Header Tank
There has only been one instance when the temperature gauge in the car altered to show high temperature, usually the car loses water but the temp gauge stays unaltered.

Things I have done to try to solve this:-

• Replaced Thermostat

• Replaced Header Tank & Cap which blew on May Day Bank Holiday

• Replaced Top Hose
(System filled from screw cap on top of radiator whilst running and
header cap off)

• Pressure Tested via RAC(Whilst Hot)

• Pressure tested when cold at land Rover Specialist this showed small leak from a core plug and from engine case but not big enough to worry about

THE WATER LOSS PROBLEMS NOW SEEM TO BE SOLVED !
BUT………

Car now for the first time, gets hot, never done this previously did it on Sunday 14th June on a 100+ mile round trip to the coast. Temp gauge went between half way(usual running temp) and the red at this point the heater was on and blowers.(Was a very Hot Day)

Monday, ran the car on short runs for 3 hours stopping and starting and had to stop to wait for someone the car started to heat up.

Under the bonnet the top hose felt hot but hard, don’t know if this because hose is new or if there is a pressure problem. There is also a smell of engine coolant coming through the heater vents from time to time.

Sounds to me like you have a blocked heater matrix or coolant radiator

You need to replace the heater core and pressure text the radiator cap, replace if it leaks down go to a parts store to do this also you need to replace freeze plugs if you don't they will blow and ruin the engine,a slo check that the water pump is not bad, loosen the pump belt and see if you can wiggle the water pump with fan connected, if you have any play replace the water pump. and add new anti freeze.

SOURCE: Land Rover 3.9 V8i Cooling Problem

I have experienced a few radiators on both discoveries and series 2 range rovers being blocked causing overheating. Also might pay to check your fan hub when the engine is hot switch off and check how freely you can turn the fan

Um,dumb question perhaps, but where is the fuel filter housed on a 1993 Landrover Discovery v8i?

Land Rover did not sell a Discovery in the USA in 1993 so I can't help you there.
Usually they are in the fuel line under the truck between the gas tank and the engine.

the easiest and in-expensive way would be to go to your local library. You should find what your looking for in the auto reference section. Or, you can buy the publications on ebay, at Auto Zone, or O'Reallies.

Land Rover 3.9 V8i Cooling Problem

Pressure test the system, it sounds like head gaskets that is backing into the water jackets and not the oil ports, which is the best of the two. Have heads checked for cracks of warping.
