My 2006 Chevy Impala is stuck in park. The gear shift is located between then seats and the button that must be pressed in to move the gear shift cannot be pressed in. We have tried pressing the brake, applying and releasing the parking brake, etc. We also turning the car to accessory but the car would still not shift out of park. Any ideas?
When you turn ignition on it releases a cable that is attached to the shifter also the shifter has a solenoid attached to it that is released when you step on the brake. Both times that I had the problem of button stuck and cant shift out of park the solenoid was sticking and wouldnt release .

Re: 2006 Chevy Impala stuck in park
Disconnect the battery then go turn the ignition to on possition then try to shift into nuetral if it does need to replace brake switch or wiring connection . You can leave in nuetral turn ignition off might not go to lock but hook battery up should be able to shift until you put back in park until you get switch replaced.
Just got my 2008 Imapla back from the shop that had a stuck shift level in park . They told me it was the wire going to the shift button. 1 day in the shop. $380 including tow.. Not covered by warrenty..

Does it go into the lock position ? Will the shifter go into the park position ? Is it a automatic transmission ?
Electronic Park Lock (EPL)/Ignition Lock Cylinder Control Actuator: If the vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission and a floor mounted console gear shift, it has an ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator purpose is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position when the transmission is in any position other than PARK and the vehicle may still be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of an ignition lock cylinder control actuator, and a park position switch that is located in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator contains a pin that is spring loaded to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when the vehicle transmission is not in the PARK position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the PARK position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.
There should be a hole in the bottom of plastic steering cover or a rubber cover that comes out . you can stick your finger up there an there is a button you push that will allow you to take out the key ! 2006 chevy cobalt How to fix key being stuck in the ignition2006 Impala shifter problems
Could be the brake switch or the shift lock solenoid. You may be able to turn the key lock to the unlock position, move the shifter out of park, then start the engine in neutral. The shifter and the shift lock solenoid would need to be inspected.
probably the shift solinoid is burnt or no power to activate it you should check all fuses this doent run off the brake lights it is a solioid that when activated by pressing the brake pedal releases the lock on the shifter just take a test light ground it and chk the wires leading to solinoid one should have power when you press the brake or it could be oposite that it supplies the ground when pressed
I went to get in my car tonight to leave and my console gear shift would not shift out of park. The gear shift button will not press in. Absolutely nothing! I have a 2007 Chevrolet Impala. Anyone know of this problem and what is the solution?
this is a shot in the dark since could be many things, but check the brake light switch, you have to put on brake to shift from park, had this happen on a ford ranger once, the switch worked under light pressure as far as lights were concerned but required heavy pressure to shift
i dident read all but the car won't go in to gear if the car dos'ent sence you pressing the brake its a safety thing check brake fuse thats seems like what is happing if you nned to the switch for the brake is right above the brake pedel it should have to wires to it but it could be a fuse
check for broken wires under the floor shifter at the BTSI connector..the 06 impala had shift solenoid problems often. If thats ok then...remove the negative battery cable and turn key to the on position...try to shift in to Neutral...if your are able to shift, the brake switch is faulty. Good luck...i hope this helps, please rate me a fixya.
You should be able to see a box type component on the backside of your brake pedal. When you step on the brake it sends a current to the computer telling it your on the brake and its ok to shift. Also known as shift lock control. You should also be equipped with an override on side of shifter, Maybe a small button to push or slide or even remove to reveal a small white button. Push it in and shift. Good luck.
