ECUs generally cannot be repaired. You will need to replace the ECU eventually it will simply fail and the car will not start.

What is the function of the EH- gearbox switch on a 1994 BMW 525i series

The EH gearbox switch serves to communicate with the TCM (Trans Control Mod). In A mode, it tells the TCM to operate in the most economical shifting program. M mode is for manual shift. If you have a * instead of a M, it stands for winter mode. This mode causes the vehicle to start off in 2nd so that torque is reduced thus reducing wheel spin on slick surfaces. Of course, by shifting into 4 or 3 puts you into sport mode for a more spirited shift pattern.

Sorry, but it seems like you have bad valve stem seals. You should also get a compression check of your cylinders for volumetric efficiency to see if the piston rings are bad also.

There is a sliding switch, I believe next to the gear shifter, that you slide to switch the modes. It should be reflected in your dash display.
