Sounds like the memory battery ran low. Did you get a "Memory battery low" warning message when you switched it on? If so then that confirms it, and I'm afraid your waypoints are lost.

As for the memory battery it will take on some charge if you just put in fresh AA batteries. How much charge depends on the age of the GPS, mine is over 10 years old and the memory cell is pretty much dead now.

Grmin may or may not replace the cell for you depeniding on the age of the device. If you want to do it yourself it's a very fidldy job requiring some expertise with a fine pointied solderign iron. The case is held together with solicone sealant aroung the joining edges - there are no plastic catches - one piece of the case has a sort of trough around the edge that the other piece/side slots into and the trough was fileld with silicone sealant and the two pieces sandwiched together. It's not a very strong glue though so it can be prised apart with a fine knife and patience.

When I am in heavy timber and not moving at a good pace my compass points in the opposite direction it is supposed to. What am I doing wrong? When I walk down the road it works perfectly.

The Garmin 12 GPS loses sattelite reception in heavy woods and that's why it doesn't work properly. It's not a fault and you're not doing anything wrong. All Garmin 12s are the same.

If you haven't used the gps for a while they can try to operate with the incorrect catalog or time. Unless these are both correct it gets lost. Usually you can correct this with a forced reset. There is also a update for this unit which also forces the update.

The data cable sort of screws on and makes contact with 4 pins. This is the little round connector. It does both power and data. The cable is a wee bit pricey from Garmin but you can make them or just get one from ebay.
The reset usually wipes out any saved routes poi's etc so using the data cable will save all of those. To reset the 12 I believe you hold the lower right corner of the screen and then power it on to reset. Then you need to let it rub until it gets the new data which can take 5-50 minutes. Makes sure your batteries are good.
I'd recommend the data cable route (use a 'gasp' non garmin cheap cable) and upload the update at the same time and you should be good to go try and get lost again.

I had the same thing happen. The problem is that the internal lithium battery is shot. Solution: phone Garmin at 1-800-800-1020 x 2,2,1. You send the receiver in along with a $42.41 check. They will probably replace the unit. They will explain exact procedures when you call.

Computer has a problem communicating with my forerunner 205

I just got off the phone with garmin tech. She helped me solve the problem. Here are the steps.

1. Go to http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00466-00

2. Download "Forerunner 205 Ver. 2.80 as of Nov 12, 2007", unzip it, and browse to the folder you unzip the files to.

3. Make sure your Forerunner is connected to your computer and turn it on. Drag file "048401000280.rgn" and drop it on "Updater.exe". A screen will pop up, select "USB" then click OK. Then wait till the process completes.

4. Go to the website on Step 1 and download "Training Center For Windows Ver. 3.3.4 as of Feb 29, 2008". Install it.

5. Run Training Center. At this point, I am able to send/receive data to my Forerunner.
