Car cranks but wont start. Gas Cap?

I have a 98 VW Bug. It is having starting problems that seem to revolve around the gas cap being fiddled with. It cranks over just fine but when it does not fire up I have to go back to the gas cap and mess with it. Is there a sensor on the gas cap that could be faulty?

No there is not but the seal on the tank may be damaged.. also check that the breath line inter the tank to the top of the tank side has not been messed around with as this helps the fuel get to the engine. the seal on the tank should cover the neck of the tank to stop spills in the event off a crash. the breather line is opened and closed by the engine running. when some one is trying to steal fuel and they cannot get the cap off the get under and cut the breather pipe as you can suck out the fuel from there if you have a full tank.

Have a 2002 chevrolet silverado cranks but wont start

use some starting fluid, spray a little bit in the carburetor then try to start it, it should start,if not check for spark at the spark plug and there is a little valve on the fuel rail it has a black cap on it looks just like a cap on the tires take the cap off and push the pin in and see if gas comes out if you have spark and gas it should start

This is something that you cannot afford to throw any more money at. Get a timing light to check to see if there is spark. Use a pressure guage to check fuel pump. Get bug lights to test injectors.

Loose gas cap

loose gas cap is just that. it means the gas tank venting system
is breached, cap is 99% cause, but not all. and will not cause no starts. unless you put a non jeep gas cap on car, with no spec, vacuum breaker in the cap and the vent goes to vacuum , killing the pump output, to low. and no starts . (use real caps)
so if that is try , take the cap off, and key on 3 times for 5sec
(this primes the system) then crank, start now>?

no start
but will it crank
if and if it cranks robustly does it run for 1 or 2 seconds and stop>
do you have spark ? at all cylinders. engine option not stated, so...??????????

if it cranks and dont start here is the ASD rule page

I have a 2008 VW Jetta TDI @ 82K miles. Check engine light comes on and sometimes off. Says issue with evap system? The car starts just fine and runs, accelerates, and idles without issue. However, when I...

There are a few things that can go wrong here. One is a bad gas cap. Dealer charges $45, and AutozoneAz charges $10. Your call there. But first, clean around where the gas cap meets the filler adapter to see if dirt has built up. If so, the gas cap is not making a good seal. On a hot day, you should hear the gas escape from the tank when opening the cap (well, on a gas car, maybe not a diesel). There is also a valve that is near the air intake box that may need replacing. It is a very easy replacement and does not require a mechanic to do. It is different from car to car, but on my Passat it's called an N80 valve. It opens a line to the evap canister to get that fuel to burn.

Worst case would be the canister as it is about $200. So do the cleaning first, then the gas cap, then the N80 (or whatever it's called on a Jetta TDI).

Heeeelp! turns over but wont start. changed gas filter, cap, rotor.

Are you sure it is getting spark to the plugs? Did you check fuel pressure? It still may be getting some fuel but not enough. Is it fuel injected or car berated?
