This number is given as an "opt-out" number to stop receiving prescreened offers.

If someone wants your social security number to opt-out of ANYTHING it is a SCAM unless it is a recognized Credit Bureau such as TransUnion or Experian or Equifax. If you are sure you are calling one of these, then it's okay to provide your social because that's how they can identify you accurately.
888-567-8688 is Experian, so it's an okay number to provide your social to. Make sure you are calling them and they DID NOT CALL YOU.
