This is shooting from the hip since I don't know your operating system. Open the control panel and go to Hardware and Sound. Next, click on sound. You should see a device listed under Playback. If not then you are missing the driver for your sound card. If that is the case you will need to go to PC's manufacturer web site and download the necessary drivers. If this is not the case then you can go back to control panel under Hardware and Sound and under the first item is Device Manager. Open this up and check that there are no devices with a flag. If you do find one with a flag then open that category and select device then right click on it which will give you the option of updating the drivers. Hope this helps.

I recently installed windows 7 ultimate on my pc which earlier had xp installed. i am unable to get any sound from my speakers creative inspire 5200 5.1...windows recognizes my speakers but coudnt install...

its not the speakers. it may be that your sound card driver is not installed so try downloading the drivers from the laptop support site and then try connecting your speakers.

My speakers work OK with other computers, but my desktop doesn't recognise when they're plugged in. I've recently upgraded my graphics card but can't see that this could influence the speakers?

Sound driver are not hard to find should be able to get one at Drivers.com

before you do that though try this

Start> control panel>Sys and Maint>device manger > and find your sound card and try to down load the drivers from there.

Also check the manual here

I have upgradded my Laptop operating system to

Use the ones for Windows Vista. Vista Drivers work for 7.

Now considering these speakers plug in via headphone jack you dont need drivers for your speakers. You should be looking for sound drivers for your laptop.
Plug in headphones see if they work if they do then there is no reason why your speakers should not.

My desktop pc wont recognise my speakers

Go to the control panel, open device manager, check the sound system. If you have installed a new O.S., then you will need to also install a new sound system. Perhaps it ac audio 97 or some other. Look for yellow exclamation mark or yellow question mark and right click on that and update drivers.
Hope that helps.

Soundsticks not recognised

Remember that speakers that plug into an analogue port do not need drivers - the drivers are for your sound card.
I sounds as though the problem lies there.

Speakers are not being recognised

i would like to know if your on board soud or sound card is not being recognized by your system? as far as i know speaker will not work if your sound device driver is not installed. so maybe theres nothing wrong with your speakers. try to go to my computer properties go to system device hardware and see if there is an yellow exclamation in your sound device. if there is, update the driver using the provided cd from your motherboard, if its on board sound device. but if its a sound card, update the driver using the cd provided from your sound card. but if your sound device is ok and there no yellow exclamation, probably you hooked your speaker connector to the wrong jack. it should be the color green one. try and good luck
