I had to had the same thing done on my 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis. They had to drop the dash to get at it. Don't the part any where else but the dealer. I went to Napa and Advanced and ended up at the dealer. Auto parts stores are rebuilt and they don't work. I watched a couple of youtube video's and Ford likes to bury them real good in the dash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA-OADF-_q8

How to remove an actuator on 2001 ford f150 xlt

You need to google 2001 f150 blend door actuator replacement. It is slightly right of center above the plastic duct work for the floor area. All lower dashboard plastic is removed to get at it.
Then the ducting is removed.

Blend door actuator failed ,how do i fix it?

The temperature blend door actuator itself is not repairable....it will have to be replaced. Its located under the center dash and is screwed to the heater box. I have included a picture of what it looks like.

Heater wont work, fan runs, but cant chamge temp 2001 F150 SUPERCREW 5.4

Do you hear any clicking or popping noises coming from dash area when you try to change the temperature? If so, you have either a bad blend door actuator or a broken blend door. If it's just the actuator, you can find it by following the popping noise to the location. It is under the dash close to the passenger's side of the vehicle. The actuator is easy to change once you find it. If the blend door is broken, you will have to pull the dash out and remove the air plenum from inside the dash to gain access to the blend door.

The temperature blend door actuator is located on the right side of the transmission hump under the evap. case. The floor ducts cover it.

HEATER TEMP CONTROL IS STUCK ON HEAT. WILL NOT SWITCH TO COOL

sounds like your blend door actuator has failed, or the lost vacuum to this actuator, or something got into the vents holding the blend door into position. Most common is the acuator failing, good news is its a fairly inexpensive part, but gettin to it is not fun, its it the ductwork in behind the dash, I'm not sure on your specific model but most I have seen the dash has to come completely out. If it gets to that point you may want a repair shop to do that. But hopefully you get lucky and its easy access.
