I have a Payne Rooftop Gas Heater that had a bad thermostat, and when I replaced the thermostat I believe that I shorted a wire and blew the low voltage fuse on the 24v system when I had the wires hoo

How do I change the low voltage fuse in a rooftop gas heat unit.

Go to the air handler and look near the transformer for a 3 amp blown fuse. Pull it out and put a new one in (it resembles a fuse used in cars).

SOURCE: Air Conditioner malfunction

Hi, Sounds like you have a short in the control circuit to me. Turn off all power going to the unit. Write down or otherwise mark the wires leaving the control board going to the thermostat. Remove them from the control board. Replace the fuse. Turn power back on and see if the fan still runs. If it does, check and or replace the heat limit switch that brings the fan on during the heat cycle. It may just need adjusted. If the fuse blows, I would think that the control board is probably bad. If it doesn't blow, Remove the thermostat. Leaving all thermostat wires open check them with an Ohm meter. There should be no continuity between them. Twist all the wires together at one end and ohm them again at the other end. You should have complete continuity on all wires. If the wiring checks out, down power the unit. Double check your wire colors and rewire the control board. With all wires open at the thermostat, turn the power back on. Touch the RED wire to the YELLOW wire. The Condensing unit should come on. Touch the RED wire to the GREEN wire. The fan should come on. Touch the RED wire to the WHITE wire. The heat should come on. Down power the unit. Replace the thermostat. Test unit. If the fuse has lasted ok but blows now it is either wired wrong at the Thermostat or the thermostat is bad. I hope I have helped. NOTE: If you can not understand these instructions. Call a licensed Heating / Air conditioning company. kstfas

SOURCE: Wiring diagram needed RV rooftop coleman

Motor1258,
Thanks for the response, to be more specific, the nine pin connector was damaged, but I was able to connect the wires back to main unit panel. I am ready to hook to the hunter thermostat and do not know which wires to connect to. This is my problem and I do not want to short something out. Hope this helps, I want to get it installed again. Thanks again for caring....Jerry

Payne gas fired forced air furnaces, model 394gad, replaced transformer was shorted out,and blower motor , started throwing sparks, also the capacitor was five bucks.

for somebody to jump the fuse it tells me there is a low voltage wiring problem. likely have a bad tstat wire somewhere. blower not turning on in auto usually means you have a G wire hooked up to the tstat and the tstat is set for gas heat, needs to be set to electric heat when G wire in place. there's a good start, NEW TSTAT WIRE and proper settings

Williams wall heater, lite pilot and heater comes on okay, but will only come off when I disconnect the thermostat?

If you have to disconnect the thermostat wire at the gas valve then it is either a shorted thermostat or a short in the thermostat wire.

If you only have to disconnect the thermostat from the wire, then it sounds like a bad thermostat, replace the thermostat

I have a duo therm model 57915531. i have checked the breakers all the fuses and the thermostat. i have found a 3 amp fuse in the control panel of the roof unit. this fuse was blown. i replaced it and it...

That unit has a thermostat I believe and 12 or 24 volts to power it. The 3 amps tells me it may be either line or low voltage, see manual. the fuse blows due to a short in the control circuit, a transformer if low voltage.

Pilot light is on low but thermostat not working

Find where thermostat wires connect to heater. Jump out with small wire where wires connect. Unit should fire. If it does, bad thermostat or thermostat wires. If no, bad gas valve.

The pilot lite is on,but the furnace will not come on.

I would first test the thermostat by taking the two wires going to it and hold them together. They are low voltage and you will not get a shock. If the unit fires up, this confirms that you have a bad thermostat. If it still does not work, open up the heater and look where the thermostat wires are connected on the gas valve. Take a small wire and jump between the two terminals. If the unit fires, you have a broken thermostat wire. If not, you may have a bad gas valve or a bad transformer. Time to call your technician.

Thermostat keeps blowing fuses

There is a short in one of the thermostat wires. The fuse is triggered on the low voltage side of the unit. Replace the wires.

My Cozy Wall Heater won't turn off! Even when the thermostat is in the off position it just keeps running. I need to physically turn off the gas supply to get it to stop. When it turn it back on i need to...

If the unit has a wall thermostat, remove one of the wires from the thermostat. If the unit stops it indicates a bad thermostat. If it continues to heat, remove one of the wires coming from the thermostat going to the gas valve inside the heater. If it continues to heat you have a bad gas valve. If the heater shuts off, you have a bad thermostat wire (short).

When I turn my thermostat on to air/cool, my inside unit will run, but my outside unit will not? I just get non-cool air inside.

Check the fuses or breaker, a lot of times it’s one of them. If it’s not, it could be several things and you will probably need to call a service technician.
Things it could be Bad contactor coil, low on refrigerant, bad wire, bad thermostat or connection, bad relay, short in the unit, (fan, compressor or capacitor ).

Heater and AC run even though thermostat is off

It sounds like you have a short in the control unit at the ceiling pack. Remove the inner shroud from the AC and pull down the control unit. Remove the cover from the control unit to access the relays. With the thermostat off, check for power at the white (or orange depending on the unit) wire coming from the thermostat to the relay board. Also check power from the yellow and gray wires from the thermostat to the control board. None of these should be hot with the thermostat off. If there is power then you have a short in the wiring between the tstat and the upper unit. If there is no power, then you have a bad control board.

Hope this helps,

Jeff
