My Mazda 2000 AUTOMATIC transmission suddenly will shift to a gear but will not engage. You can slide the stick to a different gear without pressing the button on the stick. I was told the shifter actuator clip had broken. The repairman will $480. Does this sound like it could be the correct fix and fair price for repair??

Dude go to a parts store and get a printout for removal- replacement of a shifter linkage..then go to a salvage yard and get a used cable and shifter setup and put it in yourself if possible..its not that hard...

SOURCE: Automatic Gear Shifter Light Burned Out

You shifter indicator bulb (194 bulb number) has burned out. Pretty easy and cheap fix. The top of the indicator has to be removed/lifted up and teh bulb needs to be replaced.

SECTION 307-05: Automatic Transaxle/Transmission External Controls 2003 Expedition/Navigator Workshop Manual
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Selector Lever —Floor Shift Removal and Installation

Lift the floor shift PRNDL bezel.

Disconnect the PRNDL bezel wire harness connector.

Remove the shift lever handle and cover.
1. Slide the handle bezel down.
1. Remove the screw.
1. Disconnect the TCS wire harness.
1. Lift assembly from the shifter lever.

Position the window regulator control panel aside.

Remove the screws and the console finish panel.

Remove the left side console access panel.

Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the transmission selector arm.

Remove the transmission shift cable retaining clip from the floor shift mechanism through the console access.

Remove the four bolts retaining the floor shift mechanism to the floor.

Disconnect the floor shift mechanism wire harness connector.

Remove the floor shift mechanism from the console.

Remove the brake shift interlock actuator, parking brake release mechanism and harness.
- Remove the wire harness retainers.
- Remove the wire harness retainers.
- Remove the two screws retaining the brake shift interlock assembly.
- Remove the two screws retaining the parking brake controller.

you need to have the shifting cable lubricated or replaced.

SOURCE: automatic transmission wont catch into any gear

You sould have been moore frequent on your transmission fluid changes, and you shouldn't have taken it to Jiffy Lube either. Your best bet is to drain and fill the trans fluid run it shift gears. Drain and fill again. Do this 3 times. Yeah the transmission fluid is expensive. on the last drain and fill you want to get a bottle of LUBE GUARD from NAPA or who ever sells it. put the whole 10oz bottle in. Shift Rev, 1, 2, 3, D. Neutral Rev D. If that don't work then you have bad seals.

2000 ford focus, manual, the stick stick flops around not engaged

There are three posibilities for this worn linkage on the gearbox the linkage under gear lever or a broken mounting on the bracket where the lever comes up through the floor as long as you can get all gears it will be exturnal linkage fault.
