Unfortunately if the problem started after a lightning storm the modem is almost certainly fried. I used to work at the UK's largest IT support call centre, we used to check the weather reports every morning because if there had been a lightning storm anywhere in the country we'd get a slew of calls from that region from people who could no longer connect to the web. Phone-lines collect a large static charge during a storm and are unprotected. I'd strongly suggest you contact the supplier regarding replacement.

Since your D-Link 2640 is a modem + router it may not work the way you intend.

You need just a wireless router without modem.

Run a small Ethernet patch cable from your Paradyne modem into the WAN port on your router, you can plug your existing Ethernet cable into one of the other LAN ports on the router, then access the router setup using the computer connected to the Ethernet cable using a browser and putting the router's IP address into the address line of your browser. It will most likely be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.

Once you have configured the Wi-Fi router you will have your wireless network. Full instructions should come with the router.

Routers are available for as little as $29.95 but expect to pay closer to $79.95 for satisfactory speed and capability.

Your DSU/CUS can set clocking/timing from the local central office (CO) or internal.
There are MANY external DSU/CSU in the market.
Example: Adtran and Lucent

Is this a DSL modem? and if you need drivers then are you trying to install this thru USB connection only?

Sounds like it became un-soldered from the motherboard.

if you can see a vista driver downloadable from the manufacturer's site, it will work 80% of the time.

Basically if your Internet service is DSL or cable it's just a plug and play. Just plug the computer to the modem once the Internet access has been activated by your ISP and your computer should automatically get connection from the modem.
