Hi I have the Motorola SBV 5120 cable modem and it is currently connected to my PC with Cat 5 cable and my internet works fine. I want to make a wireless connection to my laptop which is 802.11 a/b/g/n...

The SBV5120 is simply a device that converts your cable internet signal to a RJ45 computer output that connects to your single PC
It also has two RJ11 phone jacks if you use the modem as your home phone as well. It has no wireless function,
For you to have a wireless connection, you will need to purchase a Wifi Router. These can easily be got at any local computer store or a big box retailer like Best Buy, Staples, Computer City etc,
Most come as a 4 or 8 port wifi router, your choice will be the number of wired connections. In your case it looks like one.
Once you have your router, connect the Modem RJ45 to the WAN input on the router and your PC to one of the LAN ports on the router. In its default state, it should connect you to the internet as normal.
The router will have setup instructions which you can use after you connect the modem and PC.

I have the Motorola SBV5120 SURFboard Cable Modem now because we upgraded to optimum now i do not know how to find the WEP Key on this modem please help me

The Motorola SBV5120 cable modem does not have wireless capabilities and therefore does not require WEP encryption key. There is no WEP setting available for this cable modem.

WRT300N not working after computer was reformatted. Hooked everything up the same way but no connection. It is not finding the router. Could I be missing drivers? If so which ones would I need?

are you trying to connect to the wireless network ? Or you are trying to set up the router ?
Anyways first you will need to check the settings of the router.
To check the settings of the router, you will need a computer connected to the network.
open the set up page of the router and check the settings.
You don't need any drivers for the router.

Solution

Here's a user guide http://broadband.motorola.com/noflash/customer_docs/user_guides/510984-001.pdf

but basically all you do is

  • screw the coax (tv cable) to the rear of the Motorola modem
  • connect the power to the modem and wall outlet
  • plug an ethernet cable into the rear of the modem (looks like a very wide telephone jack)
  • plug the other end into the WAN or Internet port of the Linksys router
  • plug the power into the router and wall
  • if wired, plug another ethernet chord into a LAN port on the router (probably numbered 1,2,3,4) and then plug the other end into your PC/Laptop
  • if wireless, an usecured network should now show up when you search for a wireless network (named LINKSYS or something)
if all is well and DHCP is enabled by default you should be online.

I just recently reformatted my computer i've done it many times before but it always used to work off the ethernet cable. Though this time it isnt. I have the SBG900 Wireless Adapter. At the moment i'm...

Check Control Panel....system...hardware...device manager......look under network adapters and see if your network card is listed. If it is, Does it have an exclamation or question mark beside it?

If it is not listed....look under other devices for anything that is not installed correctly.

It sounds like you will need to reinstall the drivers for the network card.

No wireless connection

Go to Parental Control after logging into 192.168.10.1. Then make sure you have allowed the MAC addresses of the wireless clients ( machines). Reboot the router one after making any changes.

Good Luck

Did you have DSL prior? if so, was the MAC address cloned to the router? You may need to check that setting, its pretty common with this type of setup
