I have Altec Lansing speakers hooked up to my computer. Recently I had to redownload Windows because of a virus. Now the speakers wont work. They turn on but no sound comes out. Also there are no volume icons on the bottom of the screen anymore. May my speakers be broken?
No your sound drivers are gone. Actually they're corrupted, but we'll just say there gone.
Drivers are small pieces of software that allow an Operating System to 'communicate' with a device.
In your case Windows XP is the Operating System, and the speakers are the device.
Suggest you go online to your computer manufacturers website, and go to -> Support.
Support should be somewhere on the computer manufacturer homepage. Sometimes at the top.
On the support page, type your computer model name and model number in their search bar.
(Example: HP.com
On their homepage they have -> Support & Drivers listed at the top. You would click on it.
This takes you to their Support page. On the Support page they have
-> for product: <- and a box to the right of it.
You would type -> Pavilion dv5220us <- in the box.
(Example computer)
On the next page, it would be the Support page for the Pavilion dv5220us. You would see ->
Drivers & Downloads
You would click on that. Then you would click on the -> Audio drivers)
