I have tried switching the connections but nothing happens. The instruction manual says you can cause a short by connecting the positive wire to the negative terminal. (The wires are divided into two parts.+ and -) I wonder have I done that? Also, what would happen if I connect both speakers to one terminal? Would that really screw up?I have tried switching the connections but nothing happens. The instruction manual says you can cause a short by connecting the positive wire to the negative terminal. If you connect both speakers to one terminal, it may work fine. However, many systems were not designed to have the load of two speakers on one output.

Try swapping the connections for the speakers. i.e. plug the left speaker into the right speaker connection on the back of the main unit. What happens?
Let's say your left speaker isn't working. If you plug the left speaker into the right speaker connection on the back of the main unit and you hear sound, then the speaker is fine. If, however, you hear no sound, then the speaker or its speaker wire is faulty and will need to be replaced.
Also, check the balance setting and make sure it is sending a signal to both speakers.

Same model, same problem. (CX NA-50) I have one that worked great for two years (at best) and I haven't used it since then. I recently decided to look for a solution via the internet.
I read somewhere else that there was a class action settlement with aiwa (now expired) since many of these units had this problem.
Dear shelnaaqua,
Please connect the headphone to your system and check the sound quality,If it sound good then the connection of the speakers are not ok. This system has HI & low frequency output. Connect woofer to LOW frequency output and tweaters to HI frequency.
