The check engine light on my 2005 Trailblazer came on. Gas cap screwed on tight- what other quick things could I try before taking it in?
Verify any "check engine" by first resetting the computer then waiting to see if it returns. To reset the computer, disconnect the battery cable (some say either cable, I say positive{red} cable). Leave the cable disconnected for about 30 minutes then reconnect it and start the engine. Because the cable was disconnected from power for a while, the computer will have to reboot upon startup. Just like any computer, sometimes a reboot will solve the hangup. If the error returns, it is likely a sensor is bad or the sensor is indicating a true problem.
I have a 2003 Trailblazer and the check engine light came on less than a month after I purchased. It has been coming on and then going off for over a year now. It usually doesn't come until until you hit 70 MHP on the highway and then will go off in a day or so. The code is a 1028 which is the thermostat or the ECT senor. Both parts are inexpensive but a bear to fix.
If it's the cost your worried about, I'm told Autozone & Pep boys will scan for codes free of charge, then you can pinpoint from there.

I just bought the truck and light cam e on. Thinking of stop payment on check unless there are simple explanations. What are possible problems?
I have a 2003 trail blazer with the same problem. I have replaced the
cap three times and both oxegen sensors. This problem comes and goes, sometimes it is the gas I use and sometimes it is because I
find the cap needs to be retightened. It is very frustrating, but does not seem to affect the performance of the engine. I think it is related
to a fuel tank sensor. This has gone on for years.
I notice my check engine light comes on after accelerating quickly (like when passing others on the highway). It stays on for about 24 hours then goes away. Any ideas?
I have the same problem with my 2003 EXT Trailblazer, check engine light will not go out at all now. On my third gas cap, all started around the time I had my fuel pump replaced because of gas leaking from fuel pump, started with gas smell and got worse. GM will cover this up to I believe 7yr 100,000 miles. Very unsafe to opperate, anyway still trying to find a good expalation to this MAF or VAF P0101 code, mechanic can not find anything else wrong but this. If anyone found a solution please respond.
