if by bad esn you mean it is on the lost and stolen list, then there is nothing you can do about this, unfortunately, if you take it to a store they will confiscate it as it is illegal for you to maintain.
if you simply cannot read the esn on the back, it is in your phone and you can find it from the phone settings menu
Maybe I'm missing something here of course you can still drive. ESN has nothing to do with your ability to drive. The ESN is from the phone company, Now if you have a bad ESN then you wouldn't be able to activate it. The person that had the phone before you either has money still owing or they had a horrible record. I believe that Verison is the biggest company that uses ESN with the iPhone, I'd contact them if you don't know which company the phone was previously registered with.
Ask the seller for the ESN number, call the carrier of the phone and ask them can they run a check on the esn of that phone and they will tell you why the ESN is bad. upon fixing that issue (usually an unpaid bill) you should be good to go.
Only way to find out is call the company it belongs too Bad esn's come from insurance claims, and stolen phones. Therefore they will blacklist the esn and prevent it from ever being activated
1. Pease look for cell phone packaging for the ESN, which is usually located on a sticker. It always starts with "DEC" followed by a string of numbers.
2. Turn off your cell phone band take out the battery from the back of it. Look for the ESN below the battery surface.
3. Replace the battery. If you have not found the ESN with step two, power on your phone and go to the "Settings" option. Click on "Phone Info" to see if the ESN is listed. Write down the number and store it somewhere safe.
4. Call the phone company that services the phone to find out if the ESN is clear for activation to your account.
