Screw holding shelf bracket broke off, leaving much of the screw

Much of the screw is in the hole. Someone told me to tap the hole, but I don't know what that means. How do I do that? Do I need a special tool to do that?

The screw is probably a 1/4" srew. go to ace hardware or similar hardware store and tell them your problem and tell them you need a srew extractor. the one you can use in a cordless drill, it will drill and get the screw out in seconds.

Towel rack fix came out from wall

Go to a hardware store and wall anchor screws to reinstall the brackets that hold to towel bar to the wall. There should be two brackets and two holes on each bracket. If the existing holes are to big, drill two new holes on each side. Screw the brackets to the wall. As you turn the screw, the will expand in the screw hole and hold the brackets that you attach the towel bar to.

Screw on plate at back of oven refuse to tighten. Keeps falling out. How do I fix this?

And of the following solutions could ruin the connection, but might also fix problem.
Can you drill and tap threads for larger hole? And then use larger diameter screw?
Try screwing in a fine thread bolt so the thread doesn't match and then that might tighten.
Tap a fine thread into same hole and then leave tap shavings there when screwing in fine thread bolt... or screw in regular bolt after tapping fine thread.
Try sticking awl into hole and bending down to mis-shape the hole slightly so thread might take hold.
High heat from the connection prevents other methods such as adding glue or other material.
Loose screw and wire can cause arcing and high heat leading to fire... keep all wire connections covered so fire cannot get oxygen and spread

I have a craftsman lawn mower item#28885. I have a bagger model #247.240193. the manual is asking me to mount the brackets to the tractor using four self tapping hew screws. I need help in this step...

I don't know what screws you have, but self tapping screws are some what tapered on the end. The taper is to allow the screw to center in the blank hole,( Hole without threads) When you start to tighten the screw it will, cut it's own threads, using a little tapping fluid or WD-40 oil will make it easier to allow the screw to cut better threads and easier to tighten down the screw. Hope this answers your question. Sincerely Brad Locke DTD. 12/04/15

Enlarged hole in wall

If possible, I would recommend moving the shelf and the supporting brackets. This doesn't always have to be a major move, just enough for you to find a stud, or studs to mount the shelving brackets to. The reason I would recommend moving the brackets/shelf, is that you want to make sure that your shelf can support the weight you will place on it, avoiding this same scenario in the future. You can locate the studs a couple of different ways. You can do a visual inspection for nails or screws in the wall that are used to attach the sheetrock or other material used for walls.(In most scenarios the studs are/should run vertically (up/down) If you have a hammer you can tap on the wall where the nails are located to ensure that they are in the wall stud(s). You will notice as you tap your hammer on the wall, that where there is a stud, the sound will be solid/dense. You can also use a stud finder. If you do not own one, you can pick one up at any hardware store, and they are inexpensive in most cases. I highly recommend that, if possible, always attach shelving brackets with screws instead of nails, due to their superior holding strength. You can pick up some wall spackle, which is inexpensive, and fill the hole that is in your wall, and touch up the paint if necessary. I hope that you find this information useful, and I want to thank you for using fixya!

I have a tomos lx 2005 and where the exhaust goes into the engine block the screw broke off and the exhaust fell off and i can't get the screws out of the engine block. what should i do

you will need to drill out the screws. first apply liquid wrench or similar lubricant. purchase an "easy out" or broken screw extractor. drill a hole of proper size into the broken screw. Use the extractor to remove the remains of the screw. Buy the best drill bit and be sure to use the proper size for the extractor. You may need to apply heat to the remains of the screw to loosen it up.

Ir tourch has brocken off the unit

That's OK. When IR broke off did it leave any hole into the cavity of the scope? If it did, use some black anodized aluminum (or black plastic) plate 1/16 or smaller and mold it and fit to where it broke off only if there are holes.

Once the plate been fitted tightly. Now you drill some holes. The number of drill holes is up to you. Go down to your local fastener business, the carry all kinds of screws, machine screw, bolts, nuts, everything that you might need. Get the machine screws that are the self threading. They will look like a little machine screw with SAE threads but it will be tapered on end with a small notch cut in the end. This way you will not have to use a tap to thread the holes.-----One more thing here, pre-tap the drill with self tapping machine screws. This way you can clean out the scope cavity Then apply a thing layer of black rubber cement to the cover plate and then screw the machine screws. The length of the machine screw are critical. You don't want the to long where the reach far into the scope cavity. It could disrupted the flow of light to the NV scope.

Now, for a IR lumination. Get head light with one high luminating bulb. Get an IR lens and have it fitted to the head light, now you have IR lumination. Simple, hey. stewbison

Bike basket brackets broke. the black brackets that screw on the handlebars broken away from the screws.

Without more info I will recommend using flat washers over the holes wher the screws broke away. The holes in the flat washers must match the diameter of the screws but the flat washers must be big enough to cover the holes in the brackets. If the brackets themselves are broken you might try getting some pipe hanging material from the hardware. It comes in strip form usually copper with holes prepunched in the strips. You will also probably need bigger bolts and nuts so the heads don't pull through the holes. Please let me know if this helps.
