Cd-rom drive plays but wont burn says to put in a writable disks

You can only format re-writable disks, and it is usually done with the software that is used for burning the disk. Programs like Nero Burning Rom allow you to completely wipe a disk.

you need a cdrw to write any data to a disk
a cd-rom drive willnot burn a disk
if you have a cd-rw and its not working

Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver

you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd restart your computer then plug them back this should activate the found new hardware wizard

if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer
Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak
If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone

You may not have a writable drive.Or you have a bad cd.Try several different blank cd`s.If none will work you will have to replace the cd drive.It is not hard.

Sorry but a DVD ROM or CD ROM can't burn thus called ROM (Read Only Memory) Must be a DVD/RW or CD/RW (Re Writable)

I believe it means one of two things:
1: After burning a writable disc, it is not recommended to leave it in writable mode. You should finalize it so it can play on other players.

2: It said that it doesn't recommend burning RE-writable CDs. They tend to be much less reliable than writable ones.

right click on the drive.... go to properties... under tab recording, remove tick "enable CD recording on this drive" and press apply... after that tick "enable CD recording on this drive" and press OK.
It should work.

it is specified outsiide the cd drive "compact disk writable or rewritable"
if it is written compact disk writable outside then you can burn cd .
other wise it does not have writable facility.

and according to my knowledge it has only cd reading facility.
so can't burn cd.

Go to the device manager to insure your optical drive is in fact a DVD/RW. You should also be able to tell by looking at the front of the drive and see what it says. If it says CD Writable or DVD Rom, you cannot do it. Kind of sounds like you have a CD/RW-DVD Rom combination drive, which does not allow the burning of DVD's.

If you have the sony CD RW DVD ROM then you can't burn the data in a blank DVD.

Because your Configuration is :
Read : CD / DVD
Write : CD

This means you have a combo drive. But to burn a DVD you should have DVD RW.

use this tool to reset the cd in the registry
after you run the file - reboot the computer -
