AM portion of the receiver may have gone bad. AM is usually the easiest to tune in unless your in a dead spot.

One or more of the output transistors has failed or you have a bad speaker. Try disconnecting both speakers and turning on the unit. If it still shuts down, then the transistors are likely to be defective. These can be replaced for about $15-$25 plus labor at any service shop that handles audio gear.
