I have an old NEC Versa Premium which is being used as a print server and a backup for storage. It has died. However, the data in the Hard disk is needed. Can any expert teach me how to open up to remove the hard disk or change it?

    Dear Iain,

    Thank you for your advice.

There is only one ram slot underneath the keyboard. Press the release on the right side of the keyboard near the screen, slide the whole panel off towards the left. The keyboard can be lifted up, be careful of the flat connector and do not bend it but keep it attached. The Ram housing is concealed under a black plastic cover.

Hope this helps. It can only take a maximum of 256MB Ram PC133 if the slot is still empty.

    Best regards,

    Romaleouf

Hi
I have the same notebook and I have changed the hard drive on mine as well.It is quite simple really, you will find on the side of the A drive it sits just above it,to remove it there is one screw on the underside if you follow it in line and guess the depth of the A drive you will see it all by itself.
Just unscrew it and slide out the drive. The hard drive is a slim line compartment that sits on top of the A drive.
Just pull it out as it just slots in/out.
Just slot ou new hard drive in screw up the single screw and presto you should have a new hard drive ready to go.
Hope this helps,I have ram probs not sure where to slot the 256MB RAM into, maybe you could help me.
Regards
Iain

How to view files from old NEC versa 4050c. hard drive op-220-62005

They don't make them like that any more!

The Service Manual lists it as a standard IDE drive. Your best bet is to take it to a local computer shop. They can remove the drive and add it to a test bench set up, then transfer all the data to a pen drive as the hard drive is only 2.1 Gb.

Or use the power supply from another old computer, as the connector plugs should be the same, 12 volt and 5 volt.

Or get another on eBay

NEC Versa 4050c 90mhz Pentium laptop off eBay for $25 shipped. It has a 2.1gb drive, 40mb of ram. It came with a docking station.

Uable to boot lap top, get unable to locate os and unable to reload os as unable to format drive, would appear hard drive has had enough and gone on holiday for good

Everything you mentioned in your post....points you directly toward hard drive failure. If the mechanical of the drive are still working however, you could try to attach it to a IDE/SATA to USB adapter, attach it to another computer and see if you can access your personal files off of it. That way you might not lose your data if you do not have a sufficient backup.
