Driving with overfilled oil, rattling noise.

The oil on my car has been overfilled. It is about an inch over the fill mark. I have read online about overfilling the oil and having it foam up so that it starts affecting the crank shaft. It's still running but the acceleration is slow. Could damage already be done to the car? Should I wait for the foam to settle before trying to empty the oil pan and putting 2-3 qts. in?

It likely has little foam in it...most oils have an anti-foaming agent as part of their formula. just drain the pan and re-fill till it's at the proper level. Use a very clean pan and don't drop any road dirt from undercariage in there. Save and use extra for between service top off.

Hi. My partners Suzuki Splash makes a quite significant rattle on start up but then seems to quieten down on driving.

Hi Have you checked oil level?
1 Oil level check : locate ENGINE dipstick
2 Engine off not running
3 Pull out dipstick and wipe with cloth
4 Push back in hole fully all the way
5 Remove and check should be two markers on the lower
part of the dipstick, min and max mark.
6 Oil should be on max or just under,( top mark).
Wipe again and recheck. (check twice).
7 Top up if needed DO NOT OVERFILL.
8 If oil level ok get a mechanic to have a look.
Good luck

Suzuki reccomend to change gear box oil every 94000 miles dextron 3 is what should be in it i have also put in lucas transmisson fix in it but it still whines

box, the Automatic transmission. 3speed or 4speed or?

no car stated, just suzuki. no year stated.? so.... i guess that....

50k is better service. (if done right)

whines is death rattle. (doom/ the end play)

unless overfilled, or under filled, and its aerating the AFT and starving bearings. and whines. causing soon ,the death rattle.

did you follow the correct steps to fill it? running hot.?????

dexron max use the largest number on the shelf III is not made, nor ever necessary, DEX VI is on the shelf now.

Dexron is downward compatible to mark II. (read their pages)

50k is best or 40k better (by lab tests!)

http://www.fixkick.com/IGN_timing/tune-ups.html#Automatic.

many car manuals leave out the service, do to DIY doing it wrong

and wrecking a good transmission. in fac,t they took off the dip stick for that reason, later years.

Where do i put the gearbox oil on the chev lumina ss 2008

If it's a manual transmission then there should be a check plug on the side of the transmission. It should have a 4 sided plug you can remove with eather a 15 or 16 mm open-end wrench or an adjustable (crescent) wrench. Don't overfill, but keep it within 1 inch of the bottom of the check plug hole. Carefully use an allen wrench to check. If the vehicle has an automatic transmission and it has a transmission dipstick, then you can fill it through the dipstick tube but again do not overfill. Drive after filling and with the oil warm ensure the oil level is within the warm/hot cross hatches on the dipstick. Do not overfill. If there is no transmission dipstick on the automatic, then take it to your dealership to fill.

2005 chevy aveo was overfilled with oil at the last change. It was estimated to be around 1 1/2 to 2 quarts when then the car had a major issue 4 days after the oil change. According to my mom (who was...

too much oil can cause the crankshaft or camshaft to drag which can cause the timing belt to slip.
If you are lucky replace the timing belt and start it up. It will run badly and smoke a bit but will clear, hopefully nothing collided when the belt slipped.
The timing belt is something that any competent home mechanic can change, it just takes time.
Sorry to hear about another rip off dealer.

you have overfilled it by the sound of it and too much oil can damage the cat,So keep the revs down and stop off at a dealer as i think you have a faulty sensor and nothing else wrong but as its a europeon car then only a dealer can read the OBDII iam afraid .You will not damage anything although you overfilled it with oil providing its not more half inch over the full mark .

My m5 bmw 2006 use oil every 2000 miles, please help

How much oil is using oil? Some oil loss can be expected just read the owners manual. That is why most german cars say dont overfill as that will siphon oil out and fill oil only when it reaches the low mark.

My oil pressure lamp came on and my car over heating? i have added more oil, but i hear a constant rattling noise when the car starts. the most concerning thing is that the engine termperature gage goes...

Do not drive the car until this is corrected, as major damage can result, and may have already occurred. What is the coolant level? Is it full, or empty, or have you had to add a little or a lot recently? What is the oil level? You say you added oil, did you fill it to the correct level? Is it overfilled? Overfilling with oil is as bad as running with low oil. If it is overfilled, drain it to the correct level. When the car warms up (10 minutes) and the temp gauge goes up, are the cooling fan(s) turning on? If they aren't, that could be your overheating problem. It could also be a thermostat that is stuck closed, or partially closed. Rust and sludge in the cooling system can also cause overheating. Has the system been flushed every several years? So, answer all my questions, and I'll try to narrow the cause some. The fact that the engine 'rattles' when the car starts is a concern, as well as the overheating.

Lifters rattle when you first crank it up for about 5 mins until warm, Shouldi replace the lifteror wouldbe wasting my money to do so,.It runs great an use no oil 3800 -v-6 in a 2001 camaro, what...

Are you sure that the noise is a rattle? lifters make a ticking noise, pistons, piston pins and bearing rattle, lifter tick goes away in seconds, piston and bearing related noises take longer, and in the case of rod bearing not at all, it sounds like you may have piston noise, and in that case I would not worry about it, I would run a few cans of combustion chamber cleaner with you next 2 fill ups, carbon build up on the the # 1 piston ring land can cause the piston to "rock" in the cylinder and make a rattle type noise. I have a 1996 Corvette that has a rattle, it is a piston, GM checked it and told me not to worry about it, of course that advice cost $50.00. Also this type of noise is common to the later production 3.8L V6. Hope this sets your fears of a large repair bill to rest, just drive it, but make sure you use the correct oil and change it when recommended.
