Burnt out field windings or failed armature segments would be a good assumption here. Over heating from prolonged heavy load use or worn brushes causing the bars on the armature to burn and burn the wires.. Have an appliance electrician look at it but generally a replacement unit will be required.

My car is back at the factory getting "worked on"...sudden loss of Power and control while driving on the freeway...has anyone else experienced this? ... you have a bearing in the drum support that has frozen and now the rubber wheel is burning up. The bearing needs to be replaced ASAP. You could damage the dryer if you continue to use it.
I had the same problem. The dealership said it was a dirty cabin air filter. An ace mechanic diagnosed it as a very small oil leak from the valve cover gasket heating up as it ran down the side of the engine. We replaced the gasket and the intermittent burning smell disappeared.
Your catalytic converter is plugged up,
If you check the exhaust output at the tailpipe you will find it restricted.
